The Ultimate Awning-shelter?

Lance did you ever pick this up for the FJ? Looks like the Shady Boy is the way to go, I'm just concerned about how to mount it to a Gobi Stealth since thats what we will have.

Anybody know if there are different mounting options?

If you are wanting to buy a Shady Boy, you can send a picture of your rack to Wolfgang in Canada, and he can help you figure out how to mount it, or modify the mounting brackets.

Thanks for the info! After doing some more research I just can't justify spending that much $$ on something we won't use that often. I'm now leaning towards the Kirkham's Auto Canopy, and I know it was recommended by Moody as being quality.

I'm curious if anyone out there with one of these has a larger picture with this set up, maybe more detailed. I'm having a hard time getting the full effect from that tiny pic on Springbar's site....looks to me like it "v's" out or something from the roof? Just trying to find out if its square/rectanlge/or what and what the sq footage is! Any more info would be helpful.

Happy camping....:camping:

Oh thank you, I couldn't find that graphic anywhere  ...maybe I'm just retarded. That gives me a much better idea of whats going on with it.

Ok I went ahead and ordered the Kirkham's, hopefully it will be here before our adventure this weekend so I can give a full review!

I used to have a shadyboy on my VW camper and I keep thinking I should get 1 for my FJC...thanks for the pics...I will order mine soon.
I liked the reflective one, it really did the trick here in Az

I've been looking at the Shadyboy to mount on my Boler travel trailer. Are they pretty sturdy? Do you recommend using them with poles out at outer corners or will it work as a cantilevered awning? How do they perform in a windy situation?

I have a Hannibal awning on my Land Rover - great awning.

The Shady Boys are not Hannibal strong, but they are fairly sturdy. It works fine with out the poles on the outside corners. But in a strong wind or in heavy rain I think the down poles are a good idea.

Seems like with a Shadyboy you could stop anywhere, even on pavement, and pop out the awning in two minutes or so, and have lunch or tea in the shade. The price and simplicity of the Kirkham make it an attractive option, but I'd have to be on dirt to stake it down, and I would probably only want to take the time to set it up when I had made it to camp. Does this sound right?

That is EXACTLY why I'm interested in the Shadyboy, along with the price being reasonable.

Keep in mind the new ARB awnings, available in 1.25 meter (rear mount) and 2.5 meter (side mount) options. http://www.arbusa.com/awnings.php

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about them.... :D

I'm interested in the 1.25 meter ARB awning, but can't discern much from the ARB website. What are the extended dimensions? How does it mount/store? (Website indicates it is free standing???) Price?

And thats pretty much exactly why I ordered the Kirkham. We have never had much use for such an item before, other than when we are already stopped and have set up camp. Maybe if we end up going on more expeditions we will upgrade, but for now this should be a good simple solution for us.

You got it.

That's why I have a Shady Boy, I hate breaking down camera gear in the rain.

You can see pictures of my Shady Boy in my Tacoma thread.

I have an MSR Outfitter Wing. It is a nice shelter, and has the benfit of being able to set up freestanding or with my Maggiolina.

I also have a custom 10' X 12' traditional convas dining fly - very nice shelter, bu a PITA to carry and set up.

The MSR Wing rolls up and stows in the tent. They are now discontinued, but I have one left in stock, I think.

Mike.
