The Ultimate Awning-shelter?

I am the friend who used to have the Kelty Shelter

Good idea, really poor execution. The photo submitted by Echo_29 showing the damage to the truck is not a time shot of the stars. The truck is black, the scratches and gouges are lighter and that is the left upper side of the bed of the truck.

The materials used for this 'wing' were so insufficient in terms of strength that not only did the shelter poles bend but the material (nylon, not ripstop) came apart in numerous places.

This is a very light weight peice of gear that you could not use safely unless it was itself completely sheltered.

In the lowered position last year one of the poles bent. In the upright position, this year, it lifted off the poles (poor design) and began flapping. It then destroyed itself.

Done.

The Moss (or MSR now) Outfitter wings have two strong steel poles for the high ends and you can either stake down or pole up with additional adjustable poles some of the other 7 points & possibly attaching a couple to your rig. The wing design sheds wind and rain great. The only failure I ever experienced was I had one large end pole come down on me during the night when a large thunderstorm rolled through with gusts probably in the 50 MPH range. Nothing was damaged though, just put the pole back up and tightened the tie down lines again and all was good. They are tough and well designed puppies in my opinion.:wings:

The construction of the Kelty Carport is similar to their tents, using the same polyester fabric that they use for backpacking rainflys, and lightweight aluminum poles. I have not complaints about the construction or material quality. The design is innovative, but could use refinement.

But neither the design nor the material choice is heavy duty. Making a tarp of this size in windproof materials would require making it much heavier.

An older Kelty design, that they still make, is their 3 leg dome 'sun shelter'. I have an older model with heavy fiberglass poles. Being a dome, it can handle wind much better, especially if the legs are spread out to minimize height. In fact the smallest version is sold as a beach shelter. While self standing, it needs to be pegged down in wind. But, a dome design like this can't be used as car awning.

ARB awning vs. Kelty Carport

Is the material used in the new ARB awning, and its overall construction, significantly more wind-tolerant than the Kelty Carport?

Thanks. That one I'd already seen, but couldn't really make out any detail. I found a closer view here....

...Is that the Universal Awning Mounting Bracket, or is it something additional?...

That is the standard mounting extrusion that is included with each awning, its hard to tell from the pic but it look like they mounted that directly to the rack without using additional hardware. Works if you have ~5" of room to work with on your rack towers. Otherwise you have two options, the universal mounting kit is a gun-metal grey bracket (3 actually) that mounts to ARB roof racks, very clean but ~$70. The other option is some stainless steel "L" brackets that are really the universal kit, you use two for the 1250 and 3 for the 2500. They mount on any flat surface, such as existing racks, headache racks, roll cages, etc.

I'll have an awning in stock later this week, I'd be more than happy to get any more detailed info for you then. :D

I've never seen the Kelty ones.. so I can say for certain, but judging on the pics the ARB one is significantly more suited to wind.

Well I ordered the MSR Outfitterwing from www.amazon.com for $237.00 with free 2 day shipping!!! I'm going to canyonlands natl. park next weekend for 4 days and will test this awning out and decide if I'm also going to order the fiamma awning? I also ordered from www.rei.com a extra tent pole that can be extended from 6-10 feet to use with the msr. My idea is trying to hook the msr outfitterwing to my roof rack, hope it works!

Thanks for all of your helpful and colorful comments on this subject, 6 pages isn't bad for a few days, must be a hot topic.....

cheers,

MSR Outfitter Wing

I have used this product in conjunction with both the Columbus and the Maggiolina tents, and as a stand-alone unit. Very flexible set-up options and doesn't flap in the wind.

It is high quality. If it is staked down properly, it performa well in wind and rain. It will stow inside the Maggiolina or Columbus in it's stuff sack. Provides 200 SF of shelter (you can put a table and camp hairs under shelter) and lists for under $300. High quality product.

Shadyboy, yeah, that's what I want. How much did that set you back if you don't mind my asking? Are you happy with it? They're made about 40 miles from where I live.
