Just personal preference. In all three of my trucks that have gotten ScanGauges, I test-mounted them on the steering column and thought they felt a little too "in your face" to leave there. Of course, my use of the ScanGauge may be different from yours. I don't reference mine continually when there's nothing going on, as the truck gauges and idiot lights would let me know if I had a problem, and I only check the trip functions a few times an hour. As a result, my ScanGauges intentionally get tucked out my line of sight into the top of bottom corner of the windshield. Others would prefer your approach.
It's all personal preference isn't it? My line of sight includes the windshield, so anything there,
to me, is distracting and I find those items block my view when on the trail plotting my way around obstacles. I find when driving and scanning the road ahead that there's a level of convenience and reassurance to glance down at the instrument cluster for measurable temps that alert the data banks in my brain housing group
before the vehicle ECU decides to activate that idiot light. My personal preference only.
My dash and windscreen is a bobble head, hula girl, and electronic device-free zone. No distracting gadgets or gear adrift for this former Sailor. Just my personal opinion that applies only to me...
YMMV
