From a clean XJ to an even cleaner 4Runner! Nice score!

Hey hey, the guy from Fremont! Thank you. Just the like the XJ, I look forward to making it mine.

What springs and shocks are you looking at?

Mike

At the moment, I am planning on OME 880/906 with OME shocks. The result, from what I have read from other users is approximately 1 1/2" in the front, and 2" in the rear. As said, i'll be keeping my LT265/75s, so it's just what I am looking for; a few inches of clearance. Bumpers, more than likely, will not come into play for another few years so HD is not warranted. When out and about, it's just going to be my girlfriend and I so we won't be loaded down too heavily.

Sounds like a well matched combo! That exact setup was my original plan, but i ended up finding most of my lift used/open and unused, but overall im very happy with my setup of the ever popular tundra coils/bilstein struts and 890's in the back.

I'm not sure where you are in oregon, but im heading up to astoria for work for two weeks but will be all over the i-5 corridor, and i would love to drool over your highlander in person.

Mike,

The TRD Tundra/LC Coils is intriguing, and possibly if I can score a set on some classifieds forums, I might go that route. I would also like to give Bilsteins a try, so who knows! I just liked the OME suspension on my XJ, so I know it would be a sure thing. Although coil springs in the rear (had leaf springs in my XJ) might produce another result. I'll be keeping an eye out for some Tundra/LC coils... you find yours through CL or classifieds?

Oh nice... Astoria. You'll go right by Browns Camp OHV area, in TSF, along HWY 6. I'm not sure if you've been there, but if you have time, I would stop there.
Weekdays, I can usually be found in Eugene, and on Weekends, I can be found in Salem. If you interested and schedules align, I wouldn't mind meetin up somewhere in-between there. Don't be a stranger!

FWIW - I came from an OME setup on my 4Runner and switched to the Bilstein Tundra/TRD setup. I really like the 881 coils up front on my OME and was getting about 1.75-2" of lift without a bumper or anything. The Bilstein/Tundra combo is very similar IMO but gives you the option to lift higher if you need to later as they have 5 adjustable perches. You would sit at like 1.5" of lift on the first notch and can bump them all the way up to like 4" (CV's wouldnt like that though....). The good thing is that the lower the adjustment setting, the less preload on the coil, and you'll have a better ride. I'm currently on the 3rd notch and have ~2.5" of lift with a bumper and winch and the ride is still steller. I'm sure the lowest setting would be excellent.

Funny you mentioned TSF, i posted up a run on gitout.com and have a few people who i am going to meet up with on saturday the 2nd. I just found out im going to be there for two weeks so i might try to head back down there the weekend of the 9th as well.

My tundra coils were sourced from a scrap pile at a local 4wd shop! I currently have them set up on the second notch and i am very happy with the ride. I plan on front skids (just finished building and installing my t-case skid) and maybe a long way down the road a simple lightweight bumper, so the adjustable struts were a huge plus for me. I have about 220 into my front setup with new tundra bilstein's.

I have been happy with the rear 890's as well, i have a CO2 tank on a rack back there full time, and usually about 30 pounds of recovery gear/tools. Typically i have an additional 150lbs or so back there when wheeling between tools, high-lift, and camping gear and they seem to handle that just fine. I thought long and hard about the 906's but wanted a bit of rake so that it would sit level when loaded, plus i got brand new 890's for a steal!

I will see what my schedule looks like, as of now my trip up will be on the coast, but the way back might be on the 5.

So I have heard. I guess, it comes down to a convenience thing. If I can find the coils locally, or on the classifieds, I might go that route. But when the time comes to buy, and no LC coils are available, i'll go with OME. Question; do the LC Coils relate to a specific year of model (60, 80, 100 series LC) that will be a direct fitment for the 4Runner? Thanks for dropping some info Addison.

Mike,

Oh nice. I am quite active on GitOut as well... good site! I wouldn't mind heading out that way, but it's 3 hours away from my current location and I got to knock out some maintenance first.

That's relatively cheap... and sounds like it is exceeding your expectations. Keep me posted on your travels plan and maybe we can link up. Have a good time and enjoy the drive Mike!

That's the setup I have on my 98 Limited, including tires. It's our spare or winter car for my wife, our over the road/camping truck. When it's completely empty, (just the two of us), it's a little stiff but with more than 2 people, full of camping gear/ luggage, or pulling our popup camper the ride is smooth and confident. I just need to add drawers and a 60L frig to the back and it will be fine all the time.

Yeah, OME on my XJ was significantly stiffer when it was unloaded. Once loaded with a few hundred pounds of gear, the ride was smooth. That's good to hear someone else who has the same set-up that I want. Thanks for sharing!

No problem! The "LC Coils" are FRONT 80-Series Landcruiser coils that we put in the rear of our 4Runner's for lift. There are three different variations 7-8-9 wraps each with a different spring rate and length. The "9-wraps" being the tallest and softest I believe... they are def. the tallest but I am forgetting what the comparative spring rates are other than that they are different. I'm running 8-wraps. The only issue with these coils is their height. They will give you 3.5-5.5" of ift in the rear. However it depends how loaded you are and how old/worn the springs are. Mine are sitting at 3.5" of rear lift with the CBI rear bumper and sleeping platform in the back. If you want to keep it lower I think the 906's are a decent choice if you don't mind the ride being stiff when unloaded. I would definitely recommend a soft Bilstein shock though with any of the OME rear coils. I loved my OME fronts but HATED the OME 890's and "comfort ride" shocks - they were the farthest thing from comfortable IMO.

Wow, lots of options out there but you just need to figure out your uses and future plans as far as mods go. Different strokes for different folks! Oh, and Toytec recently realsed their "superflex" rear coils that are supposed to be 3.5" unloaded and a little lower when loaded. If I was considering the OME 890's, I'd look to the Superflex coils as an alternative for sure....

Hope something in that ramble proved valuable. Cheers

Nice T4R, congratulations!

Thank you! Your T4R has a lot of accessories that I hope to add to mine someday.

Wow, I thought the Jeep was nice until I scrolled down and saw the new 4 Runner! Nice truck

Thanks. I like a good, clean vehicle for a platform to work off of.

Thanks for the detailed information. The only problem I see with not going with Bilsteins, is the fact that the ones listed on ToyTec are specifically valved for 3" of lift, where I am only shooting for 2". I'm sure there are indeed a set out there made for 2" of height. That is why, for what I plan on doing, OME will best suite my needs for a slight bump up in suspension... but that sure could change in the coming months. All this talk makes me want to order up my suspension components, but just like everything else, I must be patient and wait for my RTT to sell! Thanks again Addison for explanation... good information, regarding anything, are hard to come by now a days.

FWIW The Tundra Bilstein 5100's have 5 adjustment perches vs. the Toytec 5100's with 3. Sonoran Steel uses the exact same (or very similar) Bilstein struts in their 1.2 lift kit (which is a SWEET kit...http://www.sonoransteel.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_2_3&products_id=1)

This isn't OME 906 related but you may find some of my notes useful overall in this thread I made: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/101758-rickashays-ome-vs-trd-tundra-lc-review.html

No problem with the information Mason, I actually enjoy regurgitating all of this info I've absorbed in my build process. You seen to have a good idea what's going on and hopefully I'm not providing too much or irrelevant info to your searches. I just want to see this beauty 4Runner of yours ready to do some exploring and hopefully we can meet up one day in the future. I'm really not that far away and I'd love to see Oregon from a local's perspective.

Interesting. Maybe OME up front and LC Coils and Tundra Bilsteins in the rear. It seems like there are a bunch of different configuration that can cater to my needs. In due time! I got to finish this school year strong, spend frugally, and prepare well. One day, our roads will cross either in the Pacific Northwest or The Great White North!
