Expedition overland article on not getting "Jeeping"

As overlanders we tend to enjoy traveling not for conquering the obstacles we encounter along the way, but for the beauty of the world we see and the destination we reach. I’m the first person to jump into my truck and tackle a difficult trail if it leads to a hidden camp spot, remote swimming hole, or ancient ruins; but when there is no purpose, no destination, or even enjoyment of the journey, are we any different from the teenager ramming his lifted truck through mud holes in a field?

So tackling a difficult trail is okay as long as there's a "valid" destination at the end... but tackling a trail just to go to the end of the trail means you're the same as a teen hitting the mud holes. Yeah can't see any bias there.

I agree with this statement:

Chris (the author) is not knocking Jeeps or the "Jeep Thing", just pondering the point of hitting hardcore trails for the sake of it. I dunno...that's not really my cup of tea, but to each their own. Some like the challenge of seeing how far their rig can take them.

Give me my Jeep, my beautiful wife, and a glass of wine while enjoying the peace and solitude of our campsite after a journey up a mountain trail to an amazing vista, remote lake, majestic forest or alpine meadow. :smiley_drive:

But I don't consider that "jeeping". I rarely hit the hard core trails... as that's not my thing either. Hitting a hard core trail just to hit a hard core trail is wheeling or rock crawling.

Guess telling the author he's showing his ***, and that he's wrong gets moderated out/cut.

"I will admit part of putting jeep thing in the title was to stir up a little trouble ;)" except that's not how it comes across. It comes across as condescending. And honestly... if the whole point was the stir the pot... why even bother?

But hey good job stirring the pot. You managed to show your *** and be wrong at the same time. Usually takes some effort, but you seemed to accomplish it flawlessly. Meanwhile I managed to waste 5 minutes reading an article where the writer couldn't find his *** with both hands, and still managed to call those that disagree with their "conclusion" as immature teens.

What's worse... is I don't even rock crawl, and will rarely tackle hard trails unless there's a destination at the end, but I just find your whole article as wrong and and in general immature.

I think there's a certain degree of projection being applied to this op-ed. At the root of it, not every overlander likes to tackle difficult terrain just for the sake of it. That applies to me, not just within the scope of off-road trucks, but motorcycles, and even my first love - mountain biking. It's not even about avoiding a good challenge as sometimes the longer miles are more daunting than the hard miles. I totally understand why people rock crawl or test themselves with ugly terrain. To those people, conquering a hard 100 feet is more rewarding than navigating 100 miles. No harm there. It just doesn't apply to everyone, and that is okay.

The message Chris is delivering is benign, and something I think we all agree is simply a part of the wide range of travels that fall under the label of - OVERLANDING.

I for one am glad there are people in our sport that like extreme rock crawling trails, and others that stick to paid campsites next to gourmet restaurants - it would suck if we all went to the same camp spot all at once :)

Hey scott....when can I take the brute double cab out? : )

Soon. We are busy installing a new "anti-bounce" suspension and litter collector system. Oh, and we had to increase the payload to handle all the BS from the web wheelers on this forum. . .

I jest, I jest (For the "Jeeping Rock Crawlers", this is called satire). . .

Well, we can say that the author did a great job in his article and got the attention of the readers! Props on that
