Are rear tire carriers essential?

Great idea with the tiregate "table"! I think I'm gonna have to steal that idea. How'd you attach it to the bottom of the tg?

i used i think either 4" or 5" "u" clamps. ill take pics of it. it will hold upwards of prolly 50lbs, more than enough. i have the bottom framed with 3/4" pvc for structure.

i have 2 full sze spares in our burban. one on top and on inside. but our dodge dakota is still on the bottom and still need to move it to the inside of bed along side the light bar. the burban has plenty of room butin think a a tire is essential if space is limited.

Heidi, Luke at 4x4Labs does make 4Runner bumpers. He has made 1st, 3rd and 4rth generation 4runner rear bumper. As daPitbull mentioned he is even fabricating an FJCruiser bumper.

Anyone have an idea of the 4x4labs pricing? I've emailed em but heard nothing back yet. I'm btwn the Irbis and 4x4labs (unless they require the truck to be there).

essential...no pretty darn good idea yes! almost all my reasons for building one this winter have been mentioned...

Get the spare out of all the crap the collects below the truck, from mud to snow to the mag cl they use in the winter time around here. that stuff will rust anything QUICK!

Also when the spare is below it is vulnerable to any number of hazards on the trail. Even easy trails you go to back into your camp spot late at night and miss that stump sticking up well there goes your spare.

Like DEEZL has shown (and others) the swingout section can easily be converted to a multipurpose role. and i try to make as many things on my truck multipurpose as possible. whether it's to carry jerry cans or tools or whatever it can be very versitile.

All in all i'd say if the funding permits got for it, i think it's worth some of the minor hassles.

if you want to look at mine, take pics and measurements to build your own, you can. No problem :sombrero:

Here is my spare carrier I had added to my All Pro rear bumper by a local fab guy, Ironman (http://www.ironmanoffroad.com/). He used a Rockstomper hinge and he had the latches (one on each end). I like them better than the clamp-style ones. He can add a Hi-Lift and/or Jerry can mounts later.

I had my spare on the roof rack and hated it up there. I have AALs and I really don't feel anything "extra" back there now. It gets too wet where I go so there was no way I was crawling under to fetch a spare. The spare in the bed took up way too much room too.

I coated it with a POR-15 like Car Quest paint. It has a dull finish now.

Sorry for such a big pic.

what kind of tires are on your yota? make model?

Kumho Road Venture MTs 32x11.50s. The quick rundown on them: I have had them for 3.5 years/30k. They have worn well but are getting replaced in the spring but not sure with what yet. Thinking of going AT. They did cup some on me due to me not rotating them enough but not bad. I would give them a "very good" all around performance with an "excellent" in mud. No chunking whatsoever on them either When I bought- $128 each, now-@$150.

That is just a POS BFG AT spare.

Back to the tire carrier thread . . . . .

Well dang I dunno what to do! Like most of us who aren't wealthy or retired I find myself in a rut as what to do when it come to a rear tire carrier (RTC). 4X4Labs got back with me and quoted at $2100 + shipping with two swing outs (very cool) $750 due at signing and the remainder due in a month when the bumper was complete. Hmmm thats a tad over my budget and I might be tempted to get a Super Charger package if I was going to spend it. On the other hand Irbis comes in at $1300 + shipping with 1 swing out and upper side protection. Alas what to do?
