Add one more Cherokee...

Yep, U-joints going would be the first thing I would say based on your description. It doesn't take a long time to kill joints when not setup correctly. Since you need to do a SYE and will need a different driveshaft, not a whole lot of sense changing U-joints unless your SYE is WAY down the road.

I hear ya. Unfortunately it's going to be a few more months until I can squeeze it in the budget. I'm looking at Tom Woods' site, and if I'm not mistaken, there's a core charge of $400 that is added to the price of the SYE, but is refunded in full if you send him your old shaft and tail cone in good condition? Is that how it works?

Is there a way I can look at a U-joint and tell if it's bad? I crawled under the Jeep and tried to wiggle the drive shaft, but it wasn't budging or anything. It couldn't be the front ones, could it? Pardon my ignorance on the subject, this is all a learning experience for me.

To those who read This thread, you're aware of the problem I had with the crankshaft positioning sensor down in Mexico. After the mitch-anic replaced it for me, I haven't had a problem, so that's a good sign.

Regarding the vibration I've been feeling the past few months (see posts above), I've finally found the culprit. I've had a drop here, a drop there kind of transmission leak going on for a while, and though just enough to be a tad annoying, I've been putting it off due to the fact that the transmission has been fine, and I really don't want to face the bill of tranny work. Well, lesson learned. The slow leak has corroded the transmission mount to the point where it's hardly even attached to the vehicle (if at all :Wow1:), causing the vibration at the gas pedal at takeoff and going over bumps. The Jeep is currently at Napa getting all new seals and fluids and getting a new transmission mount. Hopefully that will hold me over as far as repairs go for a while... I wanna buy a fridge!!!

Glad you found the culprit! Do you want the bumper or the fridge more? :D

In the past two months, I've bought a fridge and an ARB bumper for the Jeep. My girlfriend was getting jealous of my love affair so I took a trip to Tiffany & Co. today. It may be a while before I provide an update with any new goodies.

Ah, Hell, I'll probably buy a RTT soon. And a set of lights for those empty tabs on that huge piece of steel up front.

I've decided on researching an overland route to Omaha this summer. Any input there?

In Nebraska if you get up on Highway 2 (probably not, but worth it) there is the Halsey National Forest Bessey Ranger District. It started as a tree farm way out in the middle of the tree-less Nebraska sand hills and still operates as that. There is plenty of nice drives and during the warmer months there are fields of wild flowers, and a fire tower that they might let you borrow the key for. Being national forest camping is where ever you want, but there is the civilized camp ground with running water and everything at the main compound and then also the whitetail campground on the Dismal River which is a nice place to go because this time of year you probably won't see any other people. The road out to there is enough that cars usually don't make it, but it isn't bad enough to need 4x4, just sandy most of the way.

Then north of there on Highway 83 between Thedford and Valentine there is the Samual McKelvie National Forest\Valentine Wildlife Refuge. Its a bigger place to roam than Halsey NF but fewer trees and more lakes. And the lakes have pretty good fishing too. If you go in the summer though, be ready to pick thousands and thousands of ticks off of you.

One way to think about things is "what would end a trip to the store, to the outback, to the mtn's?"

To that end, my first mod was my front bumper. I tend to encounter San Diego's craziest drivers on a daily basis, and feared for my newly refreshed cooling system. I figured giving myself front tow points, and protecting my engine at the same time was a good expense.

For me a snorkel is a good mod, since I seem to seek out water whenever I can, but its low on the list compared to fixing my A/C, getting comfy seats, and new tires.

Happy Birthday! Sliders - lights are a great mod, but no love without a glove (protection).

:coffeedrink: thats funny, Garrett.

you guys really ********** your rockers all that often?

most of the overland trucks you see from other countries doing the around the world thing, don't have sliders.

American thing?

I guess it probably just depends on where you're going.

You're right, but once you build it, sometimes it's cheaper and fun to go out with the "big boys" and their "toys" and show them what a camping rig can do. My last thing I need to do is my gas tank skid and then I'm all set for following along

and busting out the canopy, stove, and grilled cheeses for lunch when I do with a cold soda. Bam
