Wednesday night Megan and I were sitting around, I was surfing expo, and I was reading a few threads on Monogahela, so I quickly decided that we would leave Saturday morning for a day and night of exploring and camping... Lots of time to plan:sombrero: I fired off a PM to Haggis who recommended 2 great camping sites to us, I printed off the email, and we were off...
First up was Canaan Loop, a 26 mile loop of public road that varies between smooth gravel and deeply rutted dirt/rock. 20 or so of the miles are easily passable by any car, only 6 or so miles need much attention. It was a beautiful drive!
Second Water Crossing:
Right after the final creek crossing, the road started to improve slightly, but were still heavily rutted when this thing came around the corner heading towards us. Some old couple got on the loop and were in wayyy over their head, but for some reason were trying to push on. Megan and I convinced them turn around and follow us out :Wow1:: On the way out we heard their car bottom out HARD at least 20 times...
After the Canaan Loop, we headed into Davis for some pizza at a nice local place, and met a cool couple who took us to see some of the older Coke Ovens that exist down by the river. Unfortunately, it was too dark to take any pics of the coke ovens, but here is the inside of the pizza place:
After the coke ovens, the local pointed us towards PR 18 which Haggis had recommended for some camping. It was getting really late, but we did not have much choice, we needed to find a place to set up for the night. On the way to the camp site we were going ~5mph down the fire road when a blur of fur exploded out of the brush and ran across the road about a foot from the front bumper. Turns out it was a bear cub, and fortunately did not hit the bumper, but we did not stick around too long in case momma bear came by...
We pushed on and decided on a camp site near the 3rd water crossing. It was right next to a beautiful creek and we could hear the stream all night:
We wanted to see more, but it was pouring rain, and we both needed to get home...
Over all, we had a great time, the 4runner worked great with the new Sonoran Steel 1.2 suspension system. We really regretted not planning to spend more time, but we are planning on heading back again in the fall to spend a longer weekend. Thank you goes out the Haggis who pointed us in the right direction for camping spots and the general area to explore.
