I just ordered up two packs of the [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A8C67W/ref=oss_product"]MSRs via Amazon[/ame].
I use stakes for my awning, the crapper tent, lantern pole, ect, and I have bent my share of cheap stakes in the past.

Also had to stock on up more "Panda All Natural Licorice Chews Licorice Bars" :D

This licorice is the best bar none.

I like the rebar idea, and I really like the buried perpendicular stick idea.

I use the largest lag screws I can find at Home depot. They're usually like 1/2" X 10"or 5/8" X 12". I use them desert and beach camping with free-standing dome tents, to keep them in place in windy conditions, or to support my 12X12 awning. If the sand is soft, I pound them in to just below sand level, and then put rocks on top of the stake, and on top of the tensioned line, to keep the stake perpendicular to the load.

I've found that I don't need a loop or a hook. The hex head is sufficient, with wrap or two around the shaft, to keep the line in place with a simple knot.

In hard ground, I use a 3-lb sledge, and then an adjustable wrench to un-thread them when I'm done.

Sure, they're a little heavy. But hey, I moved from a half-ton to a one-ton truck!

I use the rebar. Except mine have a triangle 1/8 thick plate welded on the shaft a hook to tie off to and a washer welded on top.
These have worked wonders in soft sand with the plate and also rocky terrain.
Need to dig one out of the garage and snap a picture.

My MSR stakes came a day early.
I love Amazon.
I have free two day shipping with them, but sometimes they overnight stuff for free too.
I can pay only $3.99 for overnight shipping on any "Prime" item I buy from them, glad I did not do that for this since it came the next day.
Talk about service.

Anyways...
On the left is a cheap stake that came with the Outback Privy shower/crapper shelter.
Note that it is bent already.
Typical cheap stakes that come with items like this, and there is no sharp end on it.
My Coleman lantern stand has the same cheap stakes.

The beefy aluminum stake in the middle is very high quality and tough, it is the ones that Camping Lab provides with their awnings.
I have not bent any of them yet, and will continue to use it for the awning, and also note the sharp end on it, great for pounding into the ground.

The new MSR Groundhog is on the right.
I will use them for:
Outback Privy shelter
Coleman lantern stand
Solar panel setup

The latter will hook to the horizontal pole for the Camping Lab awning with showerhooks at the top, and the bottom holes in the foldable solar panel will have guylines and the new stakes to keep it anchored to the ground.

Walmart sells a good tent stake that looks like a giant nail with a green head (made of hard platic) I've staked them on hard dirt with a mallet and they worked great.

I have several of those I bought twenty years ago.
The green plastic would always break one me.
They were similar to these.

I read on another forum where a guy uses the same ones, but he slides the plastic part down first before taking the hammer to it.
Then afterwards he slides it back up.
That way he has not broken anymore after trial/error with them.

Finally found the tent stake I was talking about. 12 inches long 3/8" rebar. Works great in most any conditions.

Those are it, and hard to beat for the price, just be careful not to hit the green part when drilling in....

I use these, and it isn't all that easy to break the green part.

'Course, after the plastic breaks it's easy enough to replace it with a fender washer. Use a slightly undersized washer and drive the stake through.
