i don't think you really ned 4 cross bars. I was going to do something similiar to what your are thinking but decided on this.

I took the entire rack set up off the tacoma when i sold the truck. If you are interested in it send me a pm

could you please explain to me where to get that rack setup and the adjustable mounts from?

what brand etc.

That way I could see if its available in Australia to do something similar.

Thankyou.

Good thinking I'll have to make sure I leave room for that stuff. I don't what you mean by bed cage...

Something like this...

(Keep in mind we have an additional accessory on this specific truck that is flush with the bed to mount smaller action packers as you see above)

This way your tent will be up high and out of the way for optimal visibility out of the back and also allows the storage space that you might need in the bed down the road...

We will have one mounted up on my truck by the end of the week for a better idea how it will look on the 2nd Gen Tacoma. Once its mounted I will post some pictures for you.

I went with Yakima. The Yakima bases fit more solid on the slides than the thule's. The thules have a little "play" when clamped down.

Here is the Rack and Eezi-Awn version of my truck. While it was cool and I had good times with this setup it was not ideal, I dont recommend this arrangement for a few reasons:
1. CG - the rack and tent up high was HEAVY...
2. Wind resistance, and getting at the travel cover was a PITA
3. Did I say heavy? That rack was a lot of steel. Aluminum would be ideal.

If I were to do a RTT again with a shell other than the FlipPac it would be the SnugPro and a Maggiolina ;)

Cool thanks for explaining that. Here's the thing, I have an ARE fiber glass shell now that I can mount on...but I wanted to make the rack in order to lower the tent below the cab and hopefully gain some mpg vs. tent-on-shell. Yeah I know I'm losing all that lockable storage space, but mounting on the shell will be easy, if the need arises, as I have a Yak rack up there now.

Thoughts?

I've got the same setup on my fiberglass shell, I think. (2) Yakima 60" tracks (4) Yakima Control towers, (4) Landing Pads 1A, and (2) std Yakima load bars. You're right it is a sturdy setup. I may have to look at taking the whole thing off the shell attaching the tracks to the bedsides like you did. :smiley_drive: Great idea with the rivnuts as well, I hadn't seen those before.

Well since you have the Yakima system on your shell I'm going to assume you have other attachments for them as well (bike rack, ski/ snowboard holder) so why not do some bars that will accept those attachments as well for the bed, as well as hold the tent.... Just an idea for maximum usability.

Easily. I've balanced on top of one of them and jumped up and down, plenty sturdy. As for the bedsides, the way they sit on them they won't do any damage to the truck.

Kevin, I pm'ed you about these bars.....do you have any pictures of them to post up for a better idea? Also if you could pm me a quote for your bars I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Ben

I wish I had a pic of my bedrack setup for my tent I use on my '04 Doublecab Taco. I thought I had one of it but don't have a good one that would show how it is. My friend and I built it out of steel and it sits only a couple inches higher than the bed. The tent mounts right to it and they could both be removed at the same time.

I am hoping to come up with a 2.0 design andhave it made out of aluminum this spring. It will be a little higher design too. I am holding off since there is a very clean FZJ80 I know of and may have to make an offer on.

I just don't really trust those bedsides that much. I am not a little guy.

FWIW, here is what I've been working on to use my existing Yakima equipment. One thing I noticed while working on this is that the top of the sides of the bed seem to taper up from back to front relative to the factory supplied tracks. You may want to drill larger mounting holes to provide some wiggle room for mounting bolts.
