2008 Tacoma D-4D swap *pics*

Just spent a few weeks in the TLC200 V8 Twin Turbo and the HiLux D4D. For some reason, the version of HiLux I was just driving felt weak with the 4cyl diesel. In Iceland, the engine was much stronger and had larger tires. It was regeared though - odd.

I do love the 4500 twin turbo V8 in the 200 though.

Overall, I would be just as happy with the 4.0 in the Tacoma as the D4D. Given the choice, I would rather have the diesel, but would have trouble justifying a swap. The HiLux I was driving got about 13L/100k loaded and with accessories. That is about 30% better than the same in a 4.0l gas.

The LR3 we were driving with a small displacement V6 TDI was perfect overall. The best motor of the group for performance and economy. It even dipped under 10L/100k and it is a pretty heavy truck.

There are two versions of the D-4D. One is a non-intercooled 2.5 liter, the other is a 3.0 intercooled. The 2.5's are dogs compared to the 3.0's. -Todd

Scott,

The D4D Hilux is a great engine/vehicle but Toyota has messed up the overall setup of the vehicle.

I dont know if you drove the manual or auto, but the 1st gear in the auto's is very very tall and the final drive of 3.73 in the auto (3.5 for manual) is too low.....

these coupled together with extra load of accessories and weight bring the performance of the vehicle down.

Why toyota didnt bring the vehicle out with 3.9's atleast or 4.1's matched to this dismall auto I dont know.

Fitting the 5 speed auto out of the prado with a shorter 1st gear would have even improved it.

Dont let that change your mind in respect to the engine, the engine is a beauty and macthed to a vehicle that has been regeared appropriately is a dream to drive.

Wait till you chip the engine.....I fitted a "Chip-It" module last week to my D4D auto with a 3" exhaust.

With my standard diff ratio's and 305/70x16 tyres I can guarantee between 1800-3,000rpm the D4D Hilux will out accelerate a standard 1GR V6 Hilux.

The thing pulls like a freight train.

I asked Chip-It (without having a dyno tune) what I could be expecting in regards to toyrque and they said atleast 50% better than standard.

Standard equates to 343nM so I should have atleast 515nM of torque. Very impressive, thou I need to play with the setting over thecoming weeks as its running slightly rich at the moment.

We're actually the exclusive dealer for Chip it here in the states ;) A Chip-it unit has already been installed on this vehicle. They make a HUGE difference in power v.s. stock. A few pages back, I posted up some performance runs highlighting the different settings of the chip.

Dieseltoyz:
You mention the V8 4.5L V8 swap in a Tundra I believe, any word on when we will see some pics of that? Also, I've got a 91 4Runner that I would like to get swapped in the next few years, if it's not too much trouble to ask, would the D4D fit without insane amounts of modification? Awesome work on the Taco either way!

The project is slated for later this year. We ultimately leave it up to the customer to sign off on us posting pictures etc. If they do, I'd be glad to post up some pictures for you. The D-4D wouldn't fit in the '91 without a ton of fabrication work. Glad to see you enjoyed the videos!

We are currently beta testing a DIY "kit" for the D-4D setups. These go into the '05+ Tacomas. We have room on the container for (5) more spots. If you're interested, email for pricing.
