Keep it as low as possible for the tires. I think 2" would be more than enough for 285s. Personally I would spend the money on shocks and 'bumps. A great set of properly tuned shocks can take a vehicle into an entirely different performance realm.
If all he wants is the 'look'....
-2" budget...
Come one, come all, rant and vent about the LACK of Jeep allowing us to have the option to buy a DIESEL jeep Wrangler in 2011 here!!!!!!
The new figures for the 2011 Jeep Wrangler Diesel where released at Jeep UK.
2-Door Wrangler Sport Diesel Manual. ( adjusted for US gallons )
33.1 mpg...
There is also the 5-cyl 2.5 liter VW engine from the transporter if I remember right. The bellhousing/flywheel stuff is the same as the 1.9L stuff. They too can be converted with a TDI-M injector pump also. I think one of those would be a GREAT engine for a CJ7/TJ/YJ.
I think the 1.9 would...
You don't need ANY sights contact-to-7 yards. Statistically, a VERY high percentage of CCW encounters are going to be within that distance. Also, most training goes right at the window under stress. Getting offline away from the position of initial contact is most important. Your not going to be...
Nice find! Sometimes I do wish my topper had more room...
I'm also glad to see you rocking the calico paintjob. I'm down to three colors now. Mostly grey, blue cowl and doors, and the topper is still the darker grey.
Cool project, keep it up.
While its not practical for most applications, the winch system I admire the most is the Vector winch system from the Foers Ibex. It center mounts a winch behind the front seating area under the floor. The line then runs towards the rear. At the rear bumper there is a snatch block that redirects...
I too carry a 1911 condition one ( cocked and locked ). Once you understand the functioning of the 1911 this should be a non-issue. Between the beaver-tail safety, the manual safety, and most 1911's having an extended beaver-tail over the hammer....there isn't an issue of the weapon going off...
My choice...
I'm partial to 1911's. This one is a very early model Kimber compact ( 4" barrel, officers frame, all steel ) in 45 apc. The holster I made myself and the clips are from Comp-Tac. I bought it used and still spend a fair bit more than $350.
I like how the thin 1911 carries...
What I suggest....
-Spare TIRE only on the rear floor. No wheel. You can fit up into the 35" tire range and still have it fit on the floor. A large amount of non-daily use ear goes INSIDE the tire in all the wasted space and a few bags around the outside in the wasted corners. Yes, it's more of...
Did someone say cutting fenders? :)
My advise. Run glass front fenders if you can. It makes things MUCH easier and better looking. The problem is the rear fenders on thinks like blazers, broncos, 'burbs, etc. The double rear wall makes it much harder to modify the rear opening much.
IMOO...
Matt,
I don't like the added weight behind the rear axle, especially on short wheelbase vehicles. The spare tire is usually fairly far from the back of the jeep, more so with fuel cans mounted. A swing out rear bumper is generally about 100lbs, spare tire is 50-100lbs, fuel cans are about 50lbs...
I wrapped a few sections of hose around a dually wheel set on a type 6 BLM engine to get out once. Not recommended. We ended up having to take the duals off to cut the hose off the rim. It did work to get the vehicle recovered.
You can get a decent electric winch these days for $300. Just...
I'm gonna get in trouble.....
1-roof racks
2-bumper mounted spare tire/cooler/gascan swing outs
3-too much lift for too little tire
4-big heavy bumpers, especially front ones.
5-roof top tents
6-heavy steel armor over everything
7-snorkels
8-light-duty vehicles that are 6000lbs+
9-rear heavy...
My dodge is still only 6800lbs. Cummins, shell, tires, and all.
The tires/wheels are more like 600 :)
The front bumper was built minimally with good protection and approach angles. All the tire weight is unsprung, while not the best for go-fast, it keeps the weight down low. The tires gave...
split the difference....
M1A scout, direct connect flash hider, gas lock front sight, ultimak rail, 2 moa aimpoint on a QD low ring to co-witness the stock irons. Get a nice wood stock and have the pull shortened about 1-1.5" and an adjustable comb. Then add a nice QD reciever scope mount with...
