Can't find what I want so the build begins.

I guess I should explain what was used to treat the steel prier to skinning. I sprayed the chassis with cold galvanizing compound and then a coat of etching primer. I plan on taping over all of the chassis seams with gorilla tape once the insulation is installed. This will serve 2 purposes. 1-...

Can't find what I want so the build begins.

Well we now have a floor , 2 layers of 3/8 ply and a layer of 1" R-tech sandwiched between and the beginnings of walls. This is the fun part..... Can ya tell I have done this before? Should get the Walls skinned by tomorrow night if all goes well.

in need of a new camp axe or hatchet

The Eastwing is not a splitting axe, it is more of a fallers axe , Sticks a lot when splitting . The head is to narrow. I carry one in my recovery gear. The FISKERS IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE splitter. Life time guarantee , holds an edge , light handle with heavy head makes for less effort to get...

Meadows or Timberline ? I was ski patrol at Meadows in the 70's. My lodge back then was a Toyota powered Dolphin.

Can't find what I want so the build begins.

A couple more tabs and a paint job will finish up the this phase of the project. 32 Hrs so far . I figure 40 hrs will do the whole chassis. Once completed the chassis will be fitted to the truck so that the tie down points can be optimized before the inner skin goes in. That will be...

Can't find what I want so the build begins.

Not in the drawing but the finished unit will have an insulated bulkhead between the range and the bunk. Swapping the sink and the range is not an option as it would screw up the cg of the camper. The Nissan pickup has a fairly short wheel base. My plan is to keep all of the heaviest...

    1985 4x4 pickup.

I hadn't joined the sight at the time of your first post. Sorry. I have recently started a build out of a small-ish expedition vehicle. Needed to see what others are doing. While doing some design research I stumbled upon this sight. I have been building off road rigs for 35 or more years (...

What base trailer to start build with? Would like a M-416 style with lid

If you have the skills and tooling build from scratch. $2000 goes a long ways at current steel prices.

Lite weight campers & RVs. Consumers/customers need to push manufacturers....

I agree completely and am in the midst of a build as we speak. Again I have to agree. While searching for a slide in for my current rig I was shocked at the just down right crap I saw. Production aluminum framed campers are ( generally ) poorly thought out and constructed units. I was...

    Multi-mount winch setup

Well Hugh , you do have a problem. I own a 1995 F-350 ,4x4 . I run the 12000 lb Reece receiver hitch and have no problems mounting my spare under the rig where it belongs. I think you should re think your hitch. A pylon ( hitch ) mounted winch is ok for a small utility winch but not for a...

Can't find what I want so the build begins.

Finallllllly an update.... Due to the holiday schedule I wasn't able to start the camper build until Sunday the 27'th. Have made some real progress since then. The beginnings of the floor. The box starts to take shape. Rear bulkhead Stringers for the forward bunk. Bridge...

Need you to help me decide, which vehicle to buy for overland adventure for 1+year

I couldn't agree more. By the way , this is a rather good description of the Jeep. Remember : all of the luxury in the world goes right out the window when stuck in knee deep mud. Ask yourself :How long do you think the interior of a Luxury SUV will last covered in mud. All pretty...
