    ARB electrical connector question

I always cut off those connectors and replace them with WeatherPack style "waterproof" connectors. These hold up a lot better (IMHO).

    Ball Heads compared

Thanks, haven. I'm in the market for a ballhead as we speak. I had the chance last month to work with a colleague's Really Right Stuff ballhead and tripod. Wow -- very, very, nice gear. US-made, and appropriately pricey.

Need Advice on Best Fly Fishing Stops Between Oregon and Denver

We have some surprisingly good trout streams in Missouri, spring fed in the Ozarks and stocked by our state conservation department. A resident annual permit is $12, and an out of state annual permit is $42. Daily permits for either resident or nonresident are $7. And they check. Best to...

    What is this?

The 500 kg sticker almost certainly refers to load-carrying capacity in the bed, not the winch. Those kind of markings are common in Asia.

    DJI Phantom

I had a chance to play with a colleague's Phantom in December during a trip to San Diego. What a blast. He then took it to Hawaii on holiday and got some terrific video. He's happy with it, but were he starting over he'd seriously consider the 3D Robotics IRIS, http://3drobotics.com/iris/...

Funny Jeep Commercial from way back

Talk to us in a few years... (smile). I'll be closer to sixty then, and 1992 still won't seem that long ago to me. My oldest car will be 52 in a couple of months. The average build year of the four cars I have (1962, 1988, 2001, 2008) is third quarter 1989. A 1992 would make my fleet newer!

Funny Jeep Commercial from way back

I'd been driving a Cherokee for a few years when that commercial came out. Heck, I still have that 88 XJ! The commercial was a hoot then, and is now too. It's not *that* old...

    recommendations for emergecy credit cards

Dunno about this... If one is an Amex cardmember, especially one with some status, the traveller services American Express offers can be a super fallback. The downside is that due to high fees there are a LOT of merchants -- especially in Europe -- who won't take Amex for purchases. I'm a fan...

Sportsmobile vs. XP Camper -- Why the XP Camper Won For Us

Drodio, weren't you so impressed with the XP Camper in your previous thread that you were considering some sort of hookup with them to promote their products? Did that relationship ever take shape?

2013: Your favorite image of the year?

...and now for something completely different... I had the chance to go to the Goodwood Revival in the south of England this past September, and it's simply the single best car event I've ever been to. (And I say that as a member of the Automobile Club of Monaco and a regular attendee at the...

Prius gets rough-road suspension for Pakistan

That's very interesting idea, haven. I like it a lot. It could open up an entirely new category of vehicles for the US, or at least push the category Subaru have mostly to themselves in a new direction.

2004 Tacoma Double Cab Gas Tank Strap Rust

I think NHTSA may have a reporting system -- your feedback, especially with photos, could be useful. As much as I don't like many things about that agency, their recall programs (voluntary and mandated) have probably done us good.

2004 Tacoma Double Cab Gas Tank Strap Rust

That's a new one on me. My 2001 DC 4WD TRD had the frame rustproofed and the spare tire hoist replaced (delivered in IL, so eligible), but I guess I gotta go look at my tank straps now... In what state does the truck live?

Consumer Reports can be frustrating at times, but their vehicle reliability data is worth reviewing.

1963 Classic Hawthorne Tent Trailer - $900 (Santa Ana)

Hawthorne was the house brand for Montgomery Ward, as I recall. Neat little tent trailer. That would be fun to have, fershure. Our family camped in a 1968-69 Apache Eagle for many years, and I myself put dozens of similar decals from all over the US on its sides. Dad sold the thing back in...

    Mothballing a Landcruiser...

I wouldn't say that's a general statement. A lot would depend on how the plastic film was made white. If it's a calcium carbonate (gound limestone) filler, yes, it's not highly UB absorbing. If on the other hand it's done with a decent amount of titanium dioxide, it would be a very good UV...

Selling Iglhaut Sprinter 4x4 German reg in US?

I don't see it as protectonism. That seems a naïve explanation for a complex system. You'll have to back that up. US regulations (especially California, and especially emissions) were for many years well ahead of EU regulations. The crap that was being grey-marketed right and left in the 80s...
