    The Aurora Borealis trip.

Super images. Some of the best northern lights pix I've ever seen. I've seen the Aurora Boralis once, and missed a display of a lifetime by one day in middle Finland a few years ago, but I've seen nothing like your shots. Thanks!

    Apple Tablet: iPad

Yep, I'm very happy to have had my iPad for nine months -- I've used the daylights out of it, and waiting for Gen 2 wouldn't have changed any of the ways I use mine.

    Strange headlight gremlin...

My short -- twice -- was in the wires that run from the twinned first headlight connector to the second headlight. A voltmeter will probably get to the issue pretty quickly. Gotta watch for bad grounds, too, but I'd check for a short between high beam and low beam circuits.

    Strange headlight gremlin...

In my old Cherokee that was *always* a sign of a short in the headlight wiring loom.

    perfect marshmallows

I guess I'm the odd one out here, but it almost brings a tear to my eye to think that kids need batteries to cook marshmallows now. Seems like we lose something for everything we gain. It's not all progress, to this kid who learned to camp in the early 60s.

    Is Film Dead? (Darkroom)

No, film is not dead, but it's moved to a group of dedicated enthusiasts. As an example, I collect -- and write with -- fountain pens. For the VAST majority of people, those are a curious item from old movies and cartoons. For those in the hobby, there's a rich community and a number of...

WTB: Used pair of Hella 500 driving lights

I've used Hella 500 fog lights for years. They're small enough to fit where I want them, and give a beam pattern I like. They're *not* the most durable lights I've ever used, unfortunately. The plastic housings (polypropylene?) weather kind of strongly, turning white-ish and rougher over a...

    WTB-Foreign license tag

And for something *completely* different from Africa, there's the Northwest Territories polar bear plate. One of the coolest in North America, IMHO:

    Photobucket vs Smugmug

No flash at all on SmugMug that I know of. Functions fine on both PC and iPad.

Can POR 15 be painted over?

A little moisture will help the polyurethane POR-15 cure even stronger. I've used POR-15 in the windshield channel on my 1988 Cherokee, and on replacement of a windshield years later, the channel was perfect. Years of water exposure didn't hurt it at all. I used POR-15 on the back of my...

Can POR 15 be painted over?

Not only CAN POR-15 be painted over, the maker highly ENCOURAGES it be painted over. It's not UV stable under direct exposure. Lasts beautifully in the dark or when topcoated. I'm a big fan of POR-15.

    Photobucket vs Smugmug

I've used SmugMug for six months or so. Generally satisfied. I like the fact that it saves full size images. Organizing galleries and photos takes some getting used to, but seems to be capable of everything I've asked. The default settings try to make pix available to Google searching...

    oil changes and dip sticks

Reported capacities are a starting guideline. For me, the dipstick is a direct measurement and therefore preferred. Of course, if there's a big deviation I double back and check everything to resolve what's up.

    IPAD sleeves and covers

The Otterbox Defender is well made, gives superb protection, but is too bulky for me. (If someone is interested in one NIB, send me a pm) One I'm intrigued by is the Zaggmate. I'd love to hear from someone who's seen one of these, either keyboard type or hard case alone. The one I use for...

CL Find: 65' Toyota Stout, Hilux, Lancruiser, Tacoma - $9000 (Miami,Florida)

This is a cool little item. My first mini-pickup was a 1970 Datsun in college. My Dad had for a time a 1973 Hilux, replacing it with a 1981 that I finally sold last year with 60 000 miles on it. (I couldn't get him to buy a 4WD way back then, or even consider the Land Cruiser, or I might...

    Dr Martens...still good?

x2 on the Rossi boots. They fit me better than Blunnies, are still Australian-made, and wear like absolute iron. There's a pair of Doc's around here somewhere, but to tell the truth I couldn't say where...

    I R Dum

The shop who does everything for my cars that I don't do is one of the *best* I've ever used. They believe, for whatever joss it's worth, that genuine Toyota gives different results. Beats me, but that's what they used when I changed all the fluids in my 2001 Tacoma when I bought it in 2009...

    Chinese Air Locker

My keyboard is made in the USA, by Unicomp in Lexington, Kentucky. A high quality, fairly priced product with buckling spring technology I love by a good US maker. My iPhone and iPad, on the other hand are made by Foxconn in Shenzhen, China. I *don't* have a choice of a US maker here, and...
