AT IT AGAIN: Paul and Mike Convert a Mid/Tall T1N Sprinter Cargo

Don't encourage Paul. He and I have been arguing about this for years. ;) There are lots of people like Paul who see no problem with the grey water on the ground or, at best, into an open bucket. But remember that we're not talking primitive camping here. They'll be dishes to wash and food and...

AT IT AGAIN: Paul and Mike Convert a Mid/Tall T1N Sprinter Cargo

Nope. There's still a bit more interesting build-out to come now that Paul-sensei is back from his Asian workshop.

AT IT AGAIN: Paul and Mike Convert a Mid/Tall T1N Sprinter Cargo

Putting carpet in this type of vehicle would normally be a zany choice, and I thought long and hard about it before selecting this option. We'll see how it works. My hope is placed in the fact that this stuff is barely carpet . . . it has a loop so tight and low that it looks like we'll be able...

    EarthRoamer XV-JP "Northwest Edition"

There IS a lot of stuff in there, and things like batteries, lots of water and extra fuel and a fridge add pounds fast. That said, fully built-out Rubicons, what with a winch, heavy bumpers front and rear, big tires and a bunch of off-road gear attached are often well over 5000 pounds. (Somewhat...

Shouldn't be long. He's back from teaching the Japanese how to make wooden surfboards.

    Bogert safe jack, bottle jack

I wouldn't recommend that the HiLift be discarded in favor of the Bogert. This jack is a replacement, and a very good one, for the bottle jack I had to carry anyway. I don't believe you can--at least on a lifted Jeep Wrangler--safely do everything you might need to do with only a HiLift or only...

    Bogert safe jack, bottle jack

It's a huge step up in ease-of-use and safety. It's also waaaay more convenient to carry the variety of extensions than enough cribbibng to provide anything like the same flexibility. (And it let's you go back to just using the HiLift jack for the things it's good at, which is a big plus.)

Maybe the $80,000 Cadillac of Offroad Trailers

Ever owned a Unimog camper? I only ask because the comparison's a bit more complicated than you've made it out to be.

    EarthRoamer XV-JP "Northwest Edition"

Well, buddy, you know I would, but I'm worried it's too small for you and the family. (Or are you leaving them behind on your forthcoming expedition?) Only thinking of your happiness. ;)

    EarthRoamer XV-JP "Northwest Edition"

Ummm . . . Jeremy knows a lot more about this sort of thing than I do, but it was my understanding that all Oregon diesel cars and light trucks with a manufacturer's GVWR of 8500 pounds or less have to be emissions tested. I think this is right, as my T1N Sprinters just squeak by with GVWRs of...

    EarthRoamer XV-JP "Northwest Edition"

I'm 100% with you on the benefits of diesel torque, and it's the thing that's made my 154 hp inline-5 Sprinters workable. But the specs I saw had the BT4 at 105 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. That's only 10% more torque than the 245 from the 3.8 liter V-6 I've got, and though it's...

    EarthRoamer XV-JP "Northwest Edition"

Thanks for the compliments, Sam, and for the idea of the engine swap. Perhaps someone who lived in a state with lax emission enforcement who had enough talent to do the work him- or herself might want to undertake this swap on an older Jeep simply because it'd be a really cool truck when...

AT IT AGAIN: Paul and Mike Convert a Mid/Tall T1N Sprinter Cargo

Well, my friend, you're welcome any time, but yes, it will officially be on display on April 12 at Northwest SprinterFest in Tualatin, Oregon. (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/121567) Independent of the fact this particular Sprinter will be there, there have historically been...

Thanks for the complement, Ken. It's coming along well. No, I don't know the weight of the wood, but it's not much. 1/2 inch plywood almost everywhere; I'm going guess 150 pounds maximum. You could save weight, at substantial expense, by going with one of the laminated honeycomb materials they...

The pictures are pretty cool, and there's lots of them. Might save you a trip to Japan. ;) And if you're a surfing woodworker--or perhaps a woodworking surfer-- they're extremely relevant.

    EarthRoamer XV-JP "Northwest Edition"

Yep. The XR629R weighs right at 300 pounds, the Big Ruckus scooter is 350, the Trail 90 is about 200. All seem to ride well on the Joe Hauler carrier, which adds another 50 pounds. The XV-JP weighs right at 7000 pounds loaded. Interestingly, it weighed the same 7K pounds when I got it. All the...
