I think anyone truly engaged in this topic with any sense of reality would never in a million years think we can ELIMINATE gun violence. Again, to borrow from someone else's car analogy, even with all that we have done on that score, we have reduced fatalities by half. That's more than 15,000...
And again, I'm not the one to initially bring up the car/gun correlation.
However, this is timely and popped up just today:

It's not bogus. It's an example of our society, through political, technological, and social means, making a positive change to correct a public issue. We have those same tools available to help quell gun violence. If we deem it necessary and choose to make the effort. Doing nothing...isn't...
Dalko, I'm not sure how you missed the parallels, particularly given that you restated my position again, only in your words. In the 70s there was an impetus to reduce automotive fatalities. To achieve that end, every facet of automobile transport was addressed. The results speak for themselves...
By they way, that Chicago reference above needs context. Although that city has strict gun laws, innumerable sources have cited that more than 66% of the guns used for violent crimes in the city came from out of state, which highlights the ineffectiveness of the current laws we have in place.
I'll jump back in because I love the car analogy.
In 1977 automotive fatalities had come off a decade of 50,000 deaths per year. It was decided more regulations needed to be implemented and over the course of the next decade we saw safety standards all across the transportation sector...
I'm a huge fan of Salomon's boots. I know Scott Brady also has a high regard for them and used a pair at the South Pole. They're crazy light, super warm, and very comfortable. They also don't have a ton of bulk.
I only mentioned it once. This is why I will politely bow out of this conversation. When these dialogues are engaged, people only read what they want to read as a means of delivering their prepared retorts.
My position, one I'm not forcing on anyone, was formed over the course of my 44 years. It is periodically reinforced by examples, those three particular friends only a small portion of them. While they're otherwise great people, their staunch interpretation of the 2nd Amendment without being...
As others have said, Constitutionally provisioned as it is, we still have applied restrictions to gun ownership. The question here is: Have we applied enough, or the right restrictions.
Regarding your inclusion of law enforcement, I'm more than aware that not all officers are good officers...
JWP58, Let me reiterate. I don't see the proliferation of guns as conducive to creating a society that is intrinsically less violent, but again, that is just my opinion.
Let me also say again, there are millions like me that don't wish to see good citizens separated from their ability to own...
I'll answer, only for the sake of discussion, not to change anyone's position. These are just my humble opinions.
And it's important to note, I would not aspire to have anyone's guns taken, or deprive them to the right to own any gun their little heart desires. However, I would prefer to see...
People make mistakes, as evidenced by injuries around camp, car crashes, etc. Mistakes with firearms carry severe consequences. It's the same reason I'm hesitant to ride with some drivers, or when I was an avid climber, why I trusted some people over others.
I've camped with people I don't...
Actually, I grew up in the midwest, took hunter safety courses, hunted a little bit and eventually joined a competitive rifle team and even competed in biathlon. In my opinion, the gun culture I grew up with in the early 80s shifted. I no longer identify with our current climate of gun advocacy...
And I'm not in that crowd. Within the scope of this discussion, no, I do not feel the need to carry. I have deemed the threat of violence to myself as pretty low. As a citizen, I would actually prefer there be more controls on gun ownership. I also prefer not to travel around people who carry -...
Every time I take portraits of a willing and cooperative victim, I hate the results. Staged portraits will always have the feel of a staged portrait. Not that it lessens the end product, but my favorite moments are fleeting and organic. Gone in a split second. This guy in Kathmandu only stood...
I'm a huge fan of the Zamberlan 1006 Vioz or the 996. My Zamberlan Lhasas have been amazing. I've also found my last several pairs of Asolos have just not measured up to their reputation.
And, just recently I fell in love with the La Sportiva Trango Cube. Last month I pulled them out of a box...
