Portable water filtration, questions for the knowledgeable.

Broken Nalgene? Seriously? When I was a big-wall climber I remember dropping a Lexan Nalgene two pitches, 250+ feet, onto the ground and it didn't break. They're about as indestructible as any bottle will ever get. Anyway, the thread that is on most "wide mouth" Nalgenes is the same thread...

Portable water filtration, questions for the knowledgeable.

I was one of the first to get my paws on the Guardian before they were released to the public. It's an amazing product. One of the most impressive I've tested in many, many years. http://expeditionportal.com/gear-scout-msr-guardian-water-purification-system/

Do you check or rent skis?

I always travel with my own boots. I often check my skis but in the last few years have enjoyed the opportunity to demo skis. You get better gear than rentals, albeit at a slightly higher price. Then again, what's an extra few bucks on a day that is already tantamount to highway robbery. Skiing...

Portable water filtration, questions for the knowledgeable.

The new MSR Guardian, mentioned above, is the most advanced purifier ever made. Bar none. I've been using it for the last several months and it's easily the best filter I've used in 20+ years. Spendy, but amazing. Look for more info on the home page of ExPo on Thursday.

Haven't backpacked since the mid 70's.

Another MSR stove tip - When you pack your stove, back off all of the valves by a half turn. It relieves the pressure on the o-rings and they'll last much, much longer. That's the other reason why I remove my pump each time.

Haven't backpacked since the mid 70's.

First off, you can sure do lighter for backpacking than a Dragonfly!! I backpack with a stove that weighs 73 grams compared to the Dragonfly at 755 with an empty bottle. But...anywho. I leave the pump in my bottle only when I know there is no chance of the pump getting smacked, poked, crunched...

    New to climbing nedd advice

Not to put too fine a point on it, but your location in Iowa is likely to keep you gym bound anyway.

    New to climbing nedd advice

This is as sound as any advice you will ever get. It's important to note that there are two distinctly unique components to rock climbing. There is the actual movement over stone. That is the use technique and the specific fitness you develop by bouldering, climbing in a gym, top roping, etc...

    Best place to live?!?!

Not saying it's the best but...Prescott, Arizona. I've been here for 17 years now. Summer is never more than 90 degrees. Winter drops snow, but it's usually gone in days, alternating with winter temps in the 60s. We have pine forests out the back door. The desert is a short drive away. Within a...

    The Defender discontinued

After spending many hours talking with LR engineers at the recent Rangie Td6 launch, I gather they have a very clear idea what the new Defender will be, and it won't be a radical departure from the current offering. They hinted that it will still have a low range, fit 35 inch rubber, and be the...

    Computer monitors - Macbook compatible

This is not very "overlandy" but do any of you have any input for selecting a desktop monitor for use with a Macbook Pro? I can't stomach the $1000 price of the Apple monitors as nice as they are. Anything I should know, avoid, or look into? Suggestions for brands, models, etc? I need...

    Cycling Shorts Suggestions

I used Gore GTX pants, but my Arcteryx jacket. The pants rock. I got HAMMERED by weather and they were amazing. They have a very trim lower leg section with adjustable velcro to keep them snug to your leg. They also have a tall back section so they don't give you plumber butt. I also used Gore's...

    Cycling Shorts Suggestions

I have to second that Gore Apparel recommendation. I bought a whole Gore ensemble for my trip to Iceland and man, I was impressed. However, my other recommendation is to look into Club Ride. I really like their shorts, even if their liners suck. As such, I have tended to use their outer shorts...

New hiking boots or sneakers to hike the Bruce Trail

I can. :) Also from La Sportiva are the Core High. I used the lows as my go-to shoe for most of my travels this year, including my primary shoe for most of my travels that involved everything from romps through the airport, to five days of walking, walking, and more walking in Kathmandu. The...

    GPS unit recommendations

Any newer device with cell service capabilities will have a GPS chipset that will read GPS and GLONASS signals just fine. It need not have cell signal or even an active cellular service contract. If you want to bolster that performance, or add it to a non-gps chipped device, you can use any...

New hiking boots or sneakers to hike the Bruce Trail

I recently did a week long hike in the Khumbu Valley of Nepal. Our group was moving pretty quickly, averaging 7-11 miles per day, at altitudes around 12,000ish feet. The terrain wasn't too rugged, but it did have lots of steps and rocks. I am a boot nerd. For this trip I wanted maximum support...

    New camera question.

The write-speed is important for certain types of shooting. If you shoot video or even a lot of high-speed continuous still shooting the write-speed will offer the best performance. I don't shoot video, but I do a lot of transfers from my SD cards to a portable hard drive and the cheap/slow...
