I dislike the fact that I can remove the doors and top on a whim... it makes the eight months of crap weather here that much more painful.
My two real frustrations are:
1. I wish there were better places to install aftermarket electronics in and around the dash on the newer interior.
2. The...
If you are looking for some "fun" and somewhat usable lighting, check out Target (or similar) during their after Christmas sales. I picked up some self-contained solar powered Christmas lights last year during that time that have worked pretty darned well considering I spent all of $5 on them...
I have a 2.5" spacer lift with stock shocks/coils and run 35" Duratracs. Fully loaded or on rough trails I experienced a bit of rubbing so now I'm also running chopped stock flares with zero rubbing issues. This setup has worked well for me; enough so that a proper lift is much further down my...
I'm not sure why you'd want to climb in and out via the Gobi ladders. They get the job done for getting up and down from the rack, but just barely. I couldn't imagine traversing a JK Gobi ladder as my first semi-upright action in the morning or in the middle of the night to pee. If you end up...
It hasn't been all that noticeable to me on the freeway, but I usually have the radio on around 16-20 (volume level on stock stereo). I think I've also gotten so used to the constant din of wind noise from the Gobi, snorkel, and fishing rod tube that am able tune it out. I'll have to ask my...
Too hot... I took her camping when it was 116* and she swore never again if forecasted over 95*.
Too cold... I took her camping when it was 21* and she swore never again when forecasted below 50* daytime temp.
Too isolated... This totally creeped her out; no more solo camping with her off...
A credit card is only worth having if you actively use it and pay it off. I learned this the hard way years ago when I needed to use a card that resided in a drawer strictly for emergency use. Lighting struck and I attempted to use it, only to find that it had been closed due to inactivity...
Depending on your budget you can use aluminum or plastic storage crates. I use three Plano Sportsman's Trunks on my Gobi although I may upgrade to some aluminum ones in the future.
Are you planning on bringing your lodging (tents) or staying in hotels? My primary concern would be your ability to fit your kit for four people in the JKU and still be comfortable. It can be done depending on how conservatively your family packs. The back seats suck for extended travel days...
Great mod! I must admit that I was secretly thinking "please don't tell me this guy mounted a bike upright on top of the rack" as I opened it. Have you considered fabbing a bracket similar to the ladder for the passenger side so that you can retain use of your driver's side ladder?
On Saturday I used it with the wheel hook attachment to raise the front tires to put rocks underneath them to free up a high centered JKU in a rock garden. The "winches and throttle only" crowd finally gave in after they stalled out the winch and dragged the anchor vehicle backwards six feet.
It is unavoidable that you'll lose few ponies. The real question is will you notice it or will it even matter since you're running such a large powerplant? I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to fab up or modify your air box to accept the snorkel connection. I'm not real happy with the way...
