    Volunteer SAR "Perks"

Perks.... I've saved more lives than I can count. I've brought (hopefully) some sense of closure to the families of those we haven't been able to save. I have a second "family" that I know, without question, will put their lives on the line for me, and I will do the same. Our training is...

    Four seat SMB?

Welcome to ExPo Mike! I believe the Sportsmobiles have fully functional rear seatbelts, including the latch system for carseats; although the passengers are a bit far back.... Another option would be to find a Quigley or Pathfinder conversion van (4x4) and set it up how you would like it...

    I found my home.

Welcome to ExPo! Great rig...but I'm with Lance, I don't think my little BJ70 would do much good trying to get that monster unstuck! BTW..."Multi-fuel diesel" What is that? Veggie & biodiesel? -H-

    Urethra, I've found it!: A BJ42

Mine has 277K on it, and no issues whatsoever. A 4 speed wouldn't be to bad, IMO, but your cruising speed would likely be about 55mph or so (100kph). -H-

Earthroamer through Utah, a Daddy-Daughter Adventure

Continuing on the Burr Trail and up through the switchbacks of Long Canyon was amazing. Easy in the ER, and would be a wonderful route on even a large expedition style moto; I've gotta go back and spend some more time hiking and further exploring the area. We pass into the Grand Staircase...

Earthroamer through Utah, a Daddy-Daughter Adventure

The next morning, Teah helped me push the buttons which let air out of the tent airbags and close up the top, which she really got a kick out of, and we headed out of Valley of the Gods and up the Moki Dugway, a couple miles of switchbacks gaining about 2000 feet in elevation, and giving a...

Earthroamer through Utah, a Daddy-Daughter Adventure

Jimmy Buffett once sang, "The very best navigators don't know where they're going 'til they get there." So, when the opportunity to use the Expeditions West Earthroamer XV-JP came up, and my wife was going to be out of town for a few days, I was forced to ditch the office for a few days and...

    Urethra, I've found it!: A BJ42

Did someone say simple diesel engine? I'm all in! As for the original question, value depends....I'm sure a pristine BJ42 here in the states could fetch $15-$20K US pretty easily, but elsewhere....dunno.... -H-

    Shotts' 100-series (Roklimo) Step-by-Step 5-year buildup

The vast majority of 864 sprung 80 and 100s sit sky high in the rear unless really, really loaded. IIRC the 864 springs were designed for rigs with large rear carriers, internal loads, water tanks, etc. My 80 worked very well unloaded and fully loaded with the 853s. -H-

    Becoming Involved?

Great to hear that you're interesting in joining SAR! I was like you; lots of outdoor experience and wanted to put it to good use. Most Sheriff's departments run the local SAR teams; although there are some private teams and governmental units (NPS, Coast Guard) that are involved in certain...

    man vs. wild "deadman" repel

Snow anchors are a normal mountaineering technique, and safe when done correctly. Pickets, snow flukes, and deadman anchors (from backpacks to stuff sacks filled with snow). What B.G. was doing is nothing short of irresponsible and dangerous. I hope someone at discovery channel gets wise...

    man vs. wild "deadman" repel

Bear will get folks killed. Period. Please, if you have anyone who actually cares about you, do not follow this knucklehead's advice....Did I mention he'll get you killed? The show might be good for entertainment, but that's it. He does absolutely no good for the many SAR teams and competent...
