Don't rule out the 300mm f/4 AF-S. These are a bargain new or used. That's a lot of lens in a compact package. I really like the built-in lens hood that deploys in less than a second with just a twist to lock it in place.

That's how mine is secured. I also made sure to spool it under some tension to take out any stretch in the line; I did this after pulling several wraps taut.
I guess I've been lucky so far. I have 3 pairs of their sandals, one pair of street shoes, and a pair of trail shoes. I've been happy with all 5 pairs so far.
