Check your cap and rotor, I have seen many Vortecs with corroded ones that have problems. Also check fuel pump pressure. Vortecs are pretty picky on pressure, just 5 psi too little can cause no/hard starts, etc.

I had a 96 Sub for a while; 3/4 ton, Vortec 454, 4x4. Nice rig but only gets 10-11 usually. The best I ever got was about 12-13 on a long road trip to S CA. You aren't going to want to haul lumber etc in the back, think small utility trailer to tow behind Sub. That way your interior stays nice.

Good tires, skidplates on exposed oil/trans pans, and make sure any leaks are fixed before you leave.

Its a 14 bolt with a 9.5" ring gear I believe. Full floaters had the 8 lug wheels and 10.5" ring gear.

As much as like diesels and modifying stuff I have to agree with ColoradoBill. Add an overdrive trans and FI to what you got now. You could do this in little stages and be out doing more research for your awesome trip reports.:)

You should be able to use your OBDII code reader to pull codes on it. 96 and newer is more or less OBDII. I would pull codes next, very suspicious that its something electronic because you said it starts and stops.
