Seconded. I've been through a raft of travel memoirs, etc. lately and easily half of them have been dreck compared to your writing Gene. Start collating some of those blog posts and send them off to some editors along with a letter of inquiry.
The FCC actually explicitly defines an emergency for these purposes:
§97.403 Safety of life and protection of property.
No provision of these rules prevents the use by an amateur
station of any means of radiocommunication at its disposal to
provide essential communication needs in connection...
I know of at least two individuals who have been given the choice between a fine or destroying their equipment. One was a Tech licensed HAM using a rig modified to spectrum outside his license. The other was unlicensed entirely.
DaveInDenver has it right though - the point of getting licensed...
Aaron, please get as many photos as you can manage. The only photos I've ever seen of their camper layout is the 4-5 the publish online. Nobody has ever posted any others!
Oh, and ENJOY YOUR TRIP!! :D
Another resource for info that I've found very helpful over the years:
GM Upfitter Guides - These are the manuals used by coach/RV builders and they have a wealth of knowledge about loading, official body measurements, Tire data by axle, etc.
The Express/Savanna (and the Astro/Safari) are...
Also worth noting is the new Propex HS2211: http://www.westyventures.com/propex.html
It can be mounted externally, and you duct the hot and return air INTO the van (rather than mounting internally and ducting combustion and exhaust gasses OUT).
If/when I decide I need a heater, this is how...
Not weather "proof", but adding shrink tubing on the back of the connector up to the terminal tab makes things tight "enough" for any portable use, in my opinion.
I think you'd want to consider a pump no matter where you mount it. Even on the roof, there isn't going to be much head pressure. I have a drain valve on my 12-gallon valterra tank, and it is S-L-O-W to drain even when wide open, since there's only about a 20" drop from tank to tap. Planning...
I want this thing so bad!
Company stock purchase pays off in February. If I survive today's layoffs and you've still got it then, I'll give you a ring.
Yeah, I think the rule is a minimum of 1 photo per $1k of asking price, right? $30k vintage race car? Better be 30 photos, at least 4 or 5 of the engine alone, right?
Well said Christophe. As someone who straddles a lot of "battle lines", politically and philosophically, I find it very difficult to be diligent about exploring all sides of a discussion once certain kinds of rhetoric are deployed.
Do you fuel directly into the vehicle, or into containers first? The couple of people I know IRL who do Baja travel always buy fuel into portable containers then re-filter into vehicles at least (mitigates the particulates problem, at least).
Not handy, but I'll try to remember to shoot one in the next couple of days. I keep the adapter hose and a bulk-tank adapter in the kitchen kit, so I'll fish it out.
Ordered mine shipped to my local Walmart, which was the best pricing at the time. Looks like Stansport might be discontinuing this model, since it's on their site as "Fall Markdown" but the price is actually higher than when I bought it last year...
Another vote for a re-gear. Even in my Astro with the 4L60E (probably ~ same weight as your Suburban, maybe a bit lighter depending on how it's loaded), running with 3.42s and 29.5" tires, I can heat up the transmission on a climb (and the tranny is working VERY hard at that point). The Astro...
I really love my Stansport Dual Fuel burner:
We can't burn dead/down in my area, so liquid fuels make a lot of sense. I really like the convenience of being able to use the Butane canisters, but having the adaptor for using propane (and bulk propane) whenever I prefer, or if the butane gets...
