3 burner camp stoves. Coleman 426/428 or Camp Chef?

As a counterpoint, I found the biggest problem I had with white-gas stoves was that they were tough to re-light cleanly. Like if I made a pot of coffee, then 15 minutes later wanted to cook eggs, the second trip was always a sooty mess. I've tried simple re-lighting, pumping and re-lighting...

    campsite pics..lets see um

I use medium-quality or cheap welding gauntlets after they get too stiff for delicate work. I use my welding gauntlets for blacksmithing as well as MIG welding, so they tend to get stiff from the combination of sweat and the occasional dunk in the slack tub (quenching iron or putting myself...

    Expedition first aid

It's good advice to think in terms of injuries you're capable of treating, and expanding your training is always a good idea. However, the other approach is to think of injuries that are likely. Everybody wants to pack their kits for serious stuff, but given my family's typical activities on...

cell phone: buying behind the curve

In a similar vein, one of the best deals in the Android market has been dropped to a lower price point as well. 16GB Nexus 5's have started offering at lower prices and the 32GB models are expected to follow soon, in anticipation of a Nexus6 or Nexus5-2014 announcement in the next month or two...

anyone have Yokohama geolandar ats on a small vehicle?

Not exactly a small vehicle, but I have a set on my Astro. Like 'em just fine. I think in that size you're fine, but bear in mind they make both P-metric and LT versions of the carcass, depending on the size...

    Plywood thickness for sleeping platform.

When I built my first bed system, I was trying to maximize under-platform height to fit my storage bins, so I used 4 steel legs on ~17" spacing. Notice there's no cross-bracing, I couldn't spare the extra height, the bins just barely fit. With this setup, the entire forward edge of the...

    oh no, another minivan

The other thing to consider with wheelchair minivans is that they also tend to drop the floor. Doesn't affect what you can do with a non-wheelchair van, but it's worth considering the context - they lift at the subframe so they can strategically chop the floor down to gain headroom without...

Is this a new trend? RTTs on rental mini vans...

2005 was the final year. The 2nd-gen body style was manufactured from 1995. The decision to discontinue was based primarily on the cost to re-tool for a 3rd-gen body versus the market shifting heavily to SUVs. They were never BUILT with a 2-speed transfer case (more's the pity), but they are...

    MSR Whisperlite Stove

These are excellent. I had one when I was a wee Boy Scout. Promptly forgot about it when I hit 16 and girls/cars/guitars/school/college all sort of happened and I stopped backpacking and camping for a couple of decades. Literally 20 years later my Mom asked for help cleaning out her garage...

"I need a Ford Van Man:

Adjusting your nomenclature might help. The longer Ford vans are most often referred to as "EB", (Extended). I only rarely see people refer to them as LB or Long.

    06 E350 Van Build - Eric3187

Another +1 on the hot-wrench, but I'll add this: A short burst of high(er) heat is better than a longer blast of low heat. Switching from my "just ok" piezo-ignition torch head to the striker-required but much hotter torch head gets me better results with less chance of peripheral damage to...

Is this a new trend? RTTs on rental mini vans...

A bit! It's cool, though, for all the people who "get" it. My new braggy-line in my sig is a paraphrase from a gal who we met on our last trip. Comparing my Astro to the lifted monstrosity in the opposite campsite, it was obvious who was spending more time having fun and who spent more time...

    Doc's AT FlipPac Build Thread

The 135 is about an inch and a half narrower (which is where it matters for me). I solved the height issue using a short pedestal base that doubles as a cover that I can use to strap the potti down inside the van during travel.

    My Vanagon Syncro build

Hey, you think that's bad - you should have seen what the Samba guys did to me when I accidentally typed Westphalia (the accepted spelling of the region in Germany) instead of Westfalia (the proper spelling of the RV). I was roasted for days.

That's probably a great call. I love my Thetford 135 for compactness, but that holding tank is TOO SMALL. We're always judicious with the flushing (usually get home with 3/4-tank of clean water), but there have been many weekend trips where two adults and one toddler have basically filled the...

Field Transfer/Backup of Media without a PC (Android solution)

I've been trying to find a solution that let me back up my media with stuff I was already going to have along. I've finally got there. I can now use my (Rooted) Android phone to transfer media from an SD Card or other device directly to a portable HDD. Explanation: I like to travel light -...

    Time-lapse panning egg timer

Another option, if you're using a Canon camera and are into DIY and hacking some stuff: There's a combo of mods to use with the CHDK software "hack" that will let you use the autofocus lamp to control a servo. The kite-photography guys are using it to get panoramic shots, etc. on servo-mounted...

    Time-lapse panning egg timer

Neat idea, but why would it only work w/ GoPro? Detailed info says it has 1/4-20 male and female, so it'd mount on a tripod and into any standard tripod mount. Only concern I would have is something with a lot of glass might be heavy on one end, but for the price it'd be fun to experiment with.
