spare tire carriers on a rig towing an expedition camper/trailer

That thought has crossed my mind as well, but I run into a couple issues there. I have a 24' gooseneck that the ZJ and M416 barely fit on as it is, so lengthening the tongue causes issues there. The ZJ gets towed to most trails we do in CO and to Moab, so the M416 has to fit on the trailer...

spare tire carriers on a rig towing an expedition camper/trailer

Roof is absolutely out of the question. I do enough borderline hardcore crawling with the rig that I need to keep the COG as low as possible. I'm thinking a real short swing is going to be the only option.

spare tire carriers on a rig towing an expedition camper/trailer

That is an option, but I do a lot of wheeling without the trailer and can't be without a spare for those times and I want to permanently move the tire outside the Jeep and build a drawer system in the back.

spare tire carriers on a rig towing an expedition camper/trailer

Looking to move the spare tire outside on the ZJ, and it would be a piece of cake if not for the M416. My concern is the swingout portion of the tire carrier being impeded by the trailer itself. What kind of issues have you guys run into with this and what have you done to combat these issues?

SPOT Connect works with your smart phone

Used the Connect for a week in Moab and Canyonlands, worked very well. Being able to send a custom message every once in a while is very nice to let people back home know what it is going on. Also was nice to send the tracking link to some wheeling buddies so they could see where we were at...

    Moab Misadventures Oct 2011

After lunch we headed out to Poison Spider Mesa. Justin had a bit of a vendetta against this trail as he broke his last time out there and was unable to complete the trail under his own power. I've been on the trail close to 20 times, so I played around a bit on the Wedgie. One PSM first...

    Moab Misadventures Oct 2011

We ended up reaching the parking lot for the Joint and hiked in. Absolutely worth checking out if you're in the area. Some spots are a bit tight for us bigger guys, but nothing too bad. We headed back towards Silver Stairs and the Confluence. I was bummed to see more paving on Silver...

    Moab Misadventures Oct 2011

We set out the next morning to go run Elephant Hill as that has been on our "To-Do" list for quite some time now. We ran into another couple in a WJ and we all headed up the switchbacks. Shortly after the switchbacks you enter the one-way section that takes you over towards Devil's Kitchen...

    Moab Misadventures Oct 2011

We had set our destination for the evening somewhere around Hamburger Rock, and the rest of the trip did not disappoint. Some nice wide open sections where we could gain some ground and make up for some of the delays earlier in the day. We came through this little section right before...

    Moab Misadventures Oct 2011

We had been wanting to make it out to Moab for an "overlanding" style trip for a while now, and having done Colorado the last 2 years we figured this was the year to do it. We had hoped to include White Rim, but part of the road north of Potato Bottom was washed out and is still impassable, so...

    Comfort of a RTT mattress!

Do any of you with the memory foam spend time in cold weather? I saw one mention of it, but nobody else brought it up. It wouldn't be unexpected for us to experience temps in the teens on some of our trips and sleeping on a brick sounds unpleasant.

    7 day loop through Colorado

There USED to be a significant number of logs blocking off that bog at the intersection of Poughkeepsie and Mineral Creek. Bummer to see those are no longer there, as there is no need to travel through the bog. Tread Lightly!

Pearl Pass and Taylor Pass With a Trailer

One of the many inspirations to my trip! Randy (IntrepidXJ) does some amazing trips. As for your trip, it sounds like you have a good grasp on the area. We used Emerald Lake as a base camp, but honestly got really lucky in that spot being open. There's really only one spot at the lake, and...

    Leveling your trailer

I've got a 1500lb tongue jack at each corner of the trailer box. Pull the pin and rotate them 180* up out of the way during travel.

Pearl Pass and Taylor Pass With a Trailer

That's exactly what we had done. We left the trailer at Emerald Lake NW of Crested Butte as we camped there for 2 nights, same thing at Mirror Lake near Tin Cup Pass. The only trail we ran that I would really NOT want to take the trailer on from that trip is Schofield Pass due to the length of...

Pearl Pass and Taylor Pass With a Trailer

Pulled my M416 over both of those with no issue a couple years back. Here's a link to the trip report: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31254 My concern would be the amount of snow that area has seen this year and when/if it might even be passable. Pearl can stay blocked...

Had it on the dash in the car today too for the drive to and from work, still working well.

SPOT Connect works with your smart phone

Tracking works well, sent a check-in/okay message as well, was received within a minute or so. Reception probably isn't the best where it's at right now too, it's just on the window sill.
