New rider seeks input on purchase

I would use a V-strom or Versus on roads that are suitable for a typical passenger car. Maintained forest service roads, etc. If you're looking at things like unmaintained roads that you would want a (stock) high clearance 4x4 on, I'd lean more towards the KLR, GS, XL/XR, DR, etc. That's not...

Charging source for bed mounted battery

Doing that will limit what you can move to 70 amps. If one of your goals is to be able to start your engine from the aux battery, or have the aux battery tied in when you are winching, 70 amps isn't going to cut it.

I had Hepco-Becker bars on my 650GS, and was really happy with them. They look a bit goofy (IMO), but they did a fantastic job of protecting the bike. I lost count of how many times I dropped that bike, all I ever broke were turn signals (which is easy to do on that bike). I don't recall the...

    iPad as sole computer

Yea . . . I don't see tablets replacing laptops anytime soon - particularly for people in traditional business environments. Right now, I have SAP, a suite of 3 SAP front end applications, 4 individual instances of Excel, Lotus Notes, and Firefox running. I'm bouncing between every one of them...

New rider seeks input on purchase

Pretty much everything out there is specific for an individual model of bike - regardless of make. Crash bars, skid plates, hard panniers, etc., are all made to fit a specific bike - that's not a BMW thing. Universal parts & accessories (radios, lights, heated gear, communication equipment...

New rider seeks input on purchase

The F650GS/Dakar is a single cylinder just like the current G650 is. The single cylinder bikes were changed from the "F" designation to "G" when they introduced the parallel twins (which got the F designation).

New rider seeks input on purchase

I haven't experienced anything out of line - but all my BMWs are/were under warranty. I have no doubt that BMW is proud of many of their repair parts - but the very few things I've bought (couple brackets, filters, etc) weren't out of line. The service interval is 6,000 miles - so even if it...

New rider seeks input on purchase

If that's what you really want -- why not? My first bike (after not riding for +/- 20 years) was a brand new 650GS. I rode it for a couple years (25K miles), then sold it for $500 less than I paid for it. It was a fun bike, did everything I wanted it to (including the TAT), but really...

    DIY Trailer - Build/Fabrication Questions

Best advice for that is to build the trailer (well, the frame & fenders anyway), set the tires where you want them, then measure the face to face distance. That way you're covered if something changes during construction.

    Small Gasoline Safe Fuel Bottles

I use MSR bottles too. As mentioned, don't over fill them. There needs to be some room for thermal expansion. You don't really want a vent on them anyway - it's going to make all your gear smell like gas. Besides - the gas will continue to evaporate until it reaches a given pressure (which...

    Am I Crazy? SportsRig Trailer

The slow technical sections won't be the problem - it's the high speed washboard that destroys trailers. You'll want to match the load on the trailer to the suspension that it has. Too much weight, and you run through your suspension travel too fast, risking damage from bottoming out the...

First TC. Please Advise: Old FWC vs. Other.

Measure the width of the rear of the FWC - in 1985 they were about 64" wide. Your 2005 Dodge is only about 61" between the tailgate posts. FWC (and presumably the other TC manufacturers) narrowed their campers in/around 1991 to accommodate the narrower truck beds. I'm one of those people with...

Fridge size dilema - for how many people & days do you see out of yours?

We have absolutely no problem with 2 people eating for a week out of our ARB 50. We found that we, and probably many others, were in the habit of refrigerating a lot of stuff that simply doesn't need it. Once we took that out (stored elsewhere), we had plenty of room for 6 or 8 bottles of beer...

    DIY Trailer - Build/Fabrication Questions

Angle and c-channel are pretty common in commercial trailers. Relative to square (or rectangular) tube - it's cheap & light. It also isn't as durable. Depending on what you do with the trailer - that may or may not be a problem. Stop by a trailer sales place and look around. Look under the...

Harley guy going to adventure bike?

Typically, BMW has a lower seat height than KTM. For commuting, that's a good thing. The downside is that it forces them to push the engine/trans down lower, which reduces ground clearance, limits suspension travel, etc. The BMW seats are also typically wider than the KTM seats - more...

Harley guy going to adventure bike?

If your definition of 'fun' and mine are the same - then I'd have to agree. You need to decide what you're after, because each bike fits slightly different niche (and they both fit their respective niche very well). The big KTM will leave a goofy grin on your face every time you treat it like...

    the death of copyright: Jetpac

    Paranoid About Security: Attempted Breakin
