Full-Size Pick Ups, Builds, Ideas, and Trips.

It's probably not what you want to hear . . . but if you want to save money on a build - then don't build. Take the $$$ you saved from not buying [what ever], and put it in the gas tank, then go somewhere cool. My truck has a couple of gauges (boost, EGT, trans temp, & fuel pressure), and a 2"...

    Seeking 1st Motorcycle

1: Are you planning on any significant length of freeway? 2: Please quantify 'off road'. Are you talking about blowing down single track, or are you out exploring old jeep trails - or maybe wandering around the maintained forest roads? 3: How much do you want to spend on the bike (keeping in...

    Trailer Bounce

Put weight on it before anything else. Pretty much every trailer out there bounces around a bit when it's empty. Shocks help - but if you're springs are too stiff for the application, you may end up needing a softer set.

    Motorcycle hitch carrier recommendations...

I've borrowed that model from a friend a few times. Definitely a good piece of gear, but no featherweight. I have a friend who has had one of those fail driving down the freeway. Nothing like dropping your bike at 65mph - sideways. I'm sure failures are not that common, but it's something...

    NEW Honda - NC700X

It's a decent looking option, with obvious cues from BMW's F650GS (twin). Likely less power than the BMW, and almost certainly to return less fuel economy - but with similar suspension specs/braking specs, and a ~$3000 advantage on price, it will likely win some business.

    TRAILER SIZE QUESTION

4 x 8. Actually, I'd go just over 4 x 8. The extra 2' isn't going to hurt you on the trail (especially the trails you are talking about), and it sure is nice to lay a sheet of plywood flat on the deck when the inevitable Home Depot run happens.

    Long wheel base limitations

Turning radius and overall width are bigger problems than break-over/approach/departure angles - at least in the places where I go.

    CRAP!

It's not limited to BFG or Treadwrite. I had the tread completely separate on a Dunlop (IIRC) while I was going about 65mph down the freeway - pulling a trailer with my Jeep on it. Google later revealed that I wasn't the only one that had one of that brand/size/model separate on the freeway...

8 foot hallmark ute in a 6.5 foot bed

When you say 'drop' your tailgate - do you mean open it, or remove it? If you mean 'open it' , be sure you can lower your spare tire with it open before loading the camper. Many times the tailgate will block access when lowered. Also, be aware that putting a long bed camper on a short bed...

GoPro vs. Snowpeak? REI Member dilemma.

I'm not a snow peak fan - but I've been pondering much the same thing as you. GoPro HD2, or something else. The 20% off + dividend makes it kinda affordable . . .

    Loctite/Threadlocker

That would be another [completely legitimate] way to state the same thing. With the finer thread pitch, one revolution of the fastener will 'stretch' it less than one revolution of a fastener with a coarser pitch - therefor it takes less torque to turn it that one revolution. To use an...

    Loctite/Threadlocker

The reason that there are different torque specs for dry and wet threads, is that the tension on the fastener (and thus the clamping force between the two parts) is established by the friction between the bolt and nut (or threaded hole, as the case may be). Basically, once you get that bolt...

Mac OSX Lion compatible topo software

IIRC, you can do pretty much everything with macgpspro, except communicate with a GPS unit. IMO, its a rather important function. Maybe that has changed since I looked into it a year or two ago (or maybe I'm thinking of some other software package -pretty sure it's the same one though), but I...

    Loctite/Threadlocker

I rarely use it, and rarely have problems with stuff falling apart. I almost always use a locking mechanism of some sort - prevailing torque nuts, split ring lock washers, flanged locking nuts, etc., but rarely loctite.
