    Battery rankings?

Mine didn't fail - but after a year, they (two of them - one was the deep cycle marine version) would only hold about 80% charge. Sears replaced both of them under warranty. I've since sold the Jeep - so I don't know how the new ones fared.

NL Portable Power Pack and Solar

What does it do? It's a self contained dual battery system - complete with everything except the battery. It has the split-charge controller, a circuit breaker, two fused power outlets (one cigar lighter socket and one hella-style socket), a built in voltage monitor, all the cable, connectors...

    trailer tongue question

Long enough that you can see your trailer behind you if you have an obstructed view out the rear window (camper, etc). If building your trailer - be sure to set the axle last. That will let you put everything on it and then put the axle where you need it to achieve 10 - 15% tongue weight.

    Trans-America Trail

The roll charts are set up for an east-to-west trip, but it wouldn't be difficult to sit down with the roll-chart and your preferred navigation software package, and simply drop a waypoint at each point listed on the roll chart. When we ran the TAT in 2008, we met a guy doing it solo (on a KTM)...

    Trans-America Trail

You're right Scott - I remember following what looked like a cattle trail leading away from a fenced/gated corral/stock pond. I was originally thinking of the ATV trail in Utah and that over grown remnant of a trail that led up to the 'peacock incident' - but I think the latter was actually...

    Trans-America Trail

I guess that depends on how you want to define 'single track'. In the context of a 4x4 on the TransAmerica trail - I'm referring to anything that has width restrictions that will prevent a narrow track CJ from getting through. In 2008, that existed. It's an ATV trail in Utah, with something...

    Trans-America Trail

The "trail" isn't really a trail - it's a route made up of existing roads & trails. As those roads close, get paved, the gates get locked, etc., the route changes. The price you pay for the maps helps cover the cost of updating the maps - which typically means putting feet on the ground. Sam...

    Latest 'adventure' trailer

Well, OK, our friends up in Prescott probably didn't have anything to do with it . . . but if someone were to compile a list of 'adventure' trialers - this would surly (sic) make the cut . . . :friday:

    Wanna see a magic trick???

If you don't like wearing rubber gloves around the kitchen . . . you can coat your fingers with olive oil (or other cooking oil) before handling any peppers. From there, you can peel/slice/dice/seed/what ever without getting that nice post-processing burn. You still don't want to rub your...

Best way to store a truck camper outside?

I set my FWC down on what amounts to a stack of 4x4s - very similar to what cnynrat does. All the weight is on the wood, none on the jacks. I also don't cover mine - but it does get a couple of coats of Solar-tek roof coating when it starts getting thin.

    Keen Shoes

I've been wearing a pair of their hiking boots for about a year. They are reasonably comfortable (obviously, that depends on your foot shape matching their boot), they are relatively light, breathe well, decent traction (even when wet), but the soles keep falling apart. I've glued several...

National Luna Power Pack ~OR~ Goal Zero

It all depends on what battery you put in it. With the Odyssey (in the NL power pack), I can get about 48 hours depending on how hot it is & how long we run the lights in the camper.

    dirt roads

Very little of the TAT is single track - the vast majority is able to be driven with a high clearance 4x4. The catch is this: when you hit those sections of single track - it isn't a simple "continue down the road another mile, then parallel the single track, and rejoin the trail on the other...

    Perfect Horn for Motos

I agree (on both counts) - but I have the added bonus of having Avid Juicy 3 brakes on my MTB (Specialized Rockhopper Pro). The rear brake howls like a freekin' coyote being eaten by a chupacabra, so I *know* it's louder than the motos.

A "Shocking" decision to make..Bilstein's or Fox?

2005. They got so hot that the rod discolored on both rear shocks & developed a bunch of cracks. Of course, to be completely fair, I doubt any comparable shock from a different manufacturer would have fared any better.
