I just had a look at Consumer Report's assessment, and though the '22 and '23 models had a lot of issues, the '24 is much better... but then it takes awhile for problems to become apparent, so that wouldn't give me much of a warm feeling. I'd go in expecting it to be no better than anything...
I don't know what your tiedowns look like, and I have no experience with this sort of camper/mounting. I do know that the 1st Gen Tundra has a C channel frame that would twist, and a hard mount to the camper will twist it as well. Domestic campers had C channel then too, so it isn't an odd scenario.
Buying a POS camper and gutting it so you can use the POS shell... just doesn't make a lot of sense.
There are lightweight pop-up shells that mount to your bed rails. Seems like that would be ideal. If you want a slide in shell, look at ATC... All Terrain Camper. They are a cheaper version of...
There is a berth covering it.
Actually they were laughing about it. These were just black bears in CA, not grizzlies. Black bears are not a problem... even mothers with cubs. The bears were around because it's a popular camp spot, and the bears are acclimated to humans. I'd never camp in such a...
Mine are pretty unscientific also. I checked to see if stiffness was what I expected for FG and carbon hand laid skins (they were, with carbon being ~2.5x stiffer) and for strength I decided that impact... or "whack it with a hammer" tests... were the most relevant, and FG was better than carbon...
JM claims that 1/2" GoBoard weighs 0.50 lb/sq ft, so with glue and aluminum you should be well over 1 lb/sq ft with 2 layers.
Did you do any strength, stiffness, or impact testing of the panels?
Ya, that floor looks bad....
If I wanted to save it I think I'd slather it with thickened epoxy (fumed silica), and maybe some FG cloth too, and make sure it's sealed.
Thinks it looks cool... buys it from overseas... realizes it has <1/5 the power of modern US campers... wonders if a big V8 can be inserted... puts it up for sale.
Regarding grizzlies... they aren't going to hang out and ambush you while you go from the cab to the habitat. If they are hanging around at all, it's because you parked in an area where people leave stuff they can eat. Check for signs of bear, and human trash. Generally they avoid humans.
If...
I could probably drag it out until I die... but I've also been using it for a couple years, so...
If this is about the pass-through, I definitely think that could wait. Probably a lot of other things, too.
