Somehow We Missed This Wild Celebration

Same reaction I had to the Yellowstone thread... was really hoping one would make it to the other side of the pond... 🤪

RV & Camper Prices vs Inflation

Crew cab long bed (8ft) for overlanding??? Is this viable or realistic?

What will you use the back seat for? Are there just the two of you? Are you and your wife experienced at long camping trips? I've posted here before about going with a F450 rather than 350. The main benefits are a much smaller turning radius (which helps a lot with maneuvering), higher payload...

Possible new class 5 rig. Am I nut's to choose gas motor ?

That being the case, does the diesel have a different transmission? If not, the one on the 7.3 must be overbuilt... ? Apparently they are different: "Same basic transmission, same exterior size, same bellhousing bolt pattern(mod motor bolt pattern), only differences are for torque handling...

    Any 7.3 gasser owners?

This is exactly it! It sounds and feels "uncomfortable" but you aren't hurting anything. And power (not torque) is what gets you over the pass. My ex's new husband oddly has the same truck I do (with a XP V2 camper), and has mentioned that it doesn't have enough power to keep up with traffic...

Suspension upgrade question... Is OME worth the extra $$$ or should I go with Bilsteins?

It may be a mix of preference and use. Firmness on small bumps doesn't bother me... and on larger ones the response is good. Still firm and planted... which seems important when hauling a camper. I didn't realize how much I disliked wallow, until I got rid of it. Also, being able to ditch the...

    Any 7.3 gasser owners?

Easy enough to do, and not hurting anything... but the sound and feel of a big engine revving is not very relaxing.

Possible new class 5 rig. Am I nut's to choose gas motor ?

If I'm going slow offroad, it's in 4lo. Gearing is plenty low in that case. I'm sure I'm giving up a little acceleration, but pushing a little harder on the peddle would take care of that... I'm just sharing my reason for not spending for a regear. If lower gears had been available stock, I...

Suspension upgrade question... Is OME worth the extra $$$ or should I go with Bilsteins?

I have Ironman shocks which also have digressive valving... and a lot of damping. The ride is firm if the bumps are small, so for typical road duty they won't be comfy. They work well on rough offroad trails though. On washboard, nothing seems to work very well besides airing down. The really...

Possible new class 5 rig. Am I nut's to choose gas motor ?

Why are you stuck in a particular gear? These trucks have 10 gears, and if you are climbing a pass or accelerating or doing something else where power is needed, it will pick the optimal one. Maybe with a regear you'll climb that pass in 7th at 4500 rpm, instead of 5th at 4700 rpm. No benefit...

Possible new class 5 rig. Am I nut's to choose gas motor ?

I agree that getting the lowest factory gearing is worth it, but... I'm skeptical of the "massive" part. You're basically just effecting 1st gear... which will make a noticeable difference off the line with a big ratio change. Won't help you get over the pass though. If the Ford SDs are...

Starlink Mini Portable Dish With Integrated Wi-Fi Router

The 50GB for $50/mo plan looks pretty good to me. If the dish lasts for 4 years that works out to ~$65/mo total. Price is similar to what phone data plans cost, and Starlink would be far more useful for me. But... if these hardware units are fragile, unreliable, or easily hacked if stolen...

Possible new class 5 rig. Am I nut's to choose gas motor ?

Same here... and sometimes that isn't even necessary. If you tap the brake and don't apply the throttle after, it "knows" you want to stay in a low gear... or something like that.

Possible new class 5 rig. Am I nut's to choose gas motor ?

I live at high altitude, and concur that the loss is very noticeable, about 3% per 1,000 ft. So at 10k you'll have 70% left. Based on spec of 383 hp that would be 268 hp for mine. The 7.3L would drop from 430 to 301. Klahanie will be moving double the weight I am, so on steep climbs that will be...

    6.5 bed or 8' bed ?

Mileage is fine for a NA big V8 that is lacking modern MPG enhancing tech. So far on 3 long trips, I've gotten 16.0, 14.1, and 14.3 MPG with the camper on, driving 70-75 on the freeway and whatever made sense on secondary roads. That's with fat 35s, 2" front lift. The turning radius is better...
