Gitout.com - Ultimate Expedition Build - 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Limited

Got them installed last week. The front coilover does not clear the upper a-arm. I'll need to either clearance and reinforce it or relocate the lower aarm mount forward. Only need about 1/4" clearance. Also need to weld tabs for the reservoir mounts. May wrap it up next week. Also, working...

    Is this anyones rig!

That bumper looks horrible. Like he cut down a fence and chopped it up and glued it into a bumper. Nice truck otherwise.

Yes! May install the rear tomorrow. I'll get some pics of the install. I wanted something dialed in with 2.5" body and resi. Not really concerned with cost more performance and durability

    Would better tires have helped

Not so. Huge difference in tire lateral traction. Lateral traction should be similar if not better than forward/back.

Just do a body lift. The 3rd gen uses a subframe / unibody design so you can't do a body lift. However, the subframe bolts on so it can be dropped. The biggest benefit is that it lifts everything front / rear bumpers (better approach / departure angles) and more side clearance. Some Japan...

Gitout.com - Ultimate Expedition Build - 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Limited

I removed all the plastic trim. Front fenders are cut 1" higher. My buddy is a fabricator with CNC table and he may build a 1-1.5" subframe lift (anyone else want one?). That will give plenty of clearance. It's drivable as-is but does rub top of the inner fender on compression. No, didn't...

    Would better tires have helped

Tire pressure would make the biggest difference. Yes, tire compound and tread are huge factors!! Time to upgrade. Get something with snowflake rating.

    255/75/17 on a Gen 3?

That's a small tire. I've been running mine on 255/85r16 (33.5") with spacers. I would highly recommend against those tires. The sidewalls are crazy weak. I've seen them go flat driving... not impressed.

    changing rear camshaft seals

There is only 1 cam seal to replace (passenger head). The other one has the cam sensor in it (rarely leaks) and if it does, replace the cam sensor. Takes 5-10 min if you've done it before. You are working blind but there is plenty of room to fit a ratchet.

    Opinion on 2006 Montero

That's a great price! Especially, if it's clean... You can't deduct maintenance from the cost. Just like you can't add value for having maintenance done. Actually, I'd rather buy one and do the timing belt. Most people don't do the water pump, idler pulleys, tensioner, crank seal, cam...

    Gen 3 debate, 3.5 or 3.8?

It's most likely the wheel bearing... However, I just got done rebuilding my front diff. It has 3 bearings on the driver side of the housing. Probably rather unlikely to go bad unless run without gear oil.

    Just bought a 3rd Gen!

Another NW Mitsu! That looks like a well cared for truck.

    Gen 3 debate, 3.5 or 3.8?

Really? I completely disagree with most of this. #1 - Stock suspension sucks. Get some HD springs. I've had no trouble hauling 300-500lbs in the back on longer expedition trips. #2 - Skids - Yes, they are expensive to import. However, you could easily pay a fabricator to build skids. #3 -...

Yes. Will decide mounting location when they arrive. It will be outside in the wheel well. The new wheels have plenty of offset so location shouldn't be an issue but will find out.

Finally got around to getting some video editing in. Since I'm waiting on parts... figured I'd do some editing. Quick Monty update: I pulled the front end out of the Montero yesterday and waiting for a couple bushings before installing the 4.90 gears w/ ARB locker. Also replaced all the axle...

    Trans-America Trail in a Stock Montero! Gitout.com

Trans-America Trail in a Stock Montero - Part 2 : A Deep Hole Be sure to read the Trip Intro - Part 1. We got a late start leaving our hotel in Savannah, Tennessee and continued down the highway. The first 200 miles of the route were paved back roads, most were narrow and infrequently...

Upper Control arm and Ball joint question

Pickle fork = bad idea. I can pull the front end apart in 30 min or less. It's extremely simple. Get the proper torque specs (and torque wrench), 4 lb hammer and basic hand tools. It's as simple as unbolting and bolting back up. Here's a video on how to pop the ball joint.

    Shock Suggestions?

OME Nitro "Sport" are the best for the money. I've read many people happy with them after 80-100k miles. Bilsteins are junk in comparison. Remember the OME suspension was designed for Australia where it gets used much harder than in the US.

    Gen 3 debate, 3.5 or 3.8?

You need to be parked on level ground if evaluating the camber. This is a non issue especially if you want to lift it. No, it should not smell like coolant. However, if the coolant levels are full then probably condensation. Head gasket failure is not common on these trucks. Wheel bearings...
