This build will be different that most you've seen. My first priority is adventures. My goal is to limit the Montero down time and keep it on the trail. I sold my 2013 Tacoma and was in search for a replacement vehicle. Price wasn't really an issue; although ideally I wanted to keep under...
If you don't drive trails... No question. Tundra.
I loved my 2010 Tundra Limited 4x4 5.7L. It averaged 16.5mpg over the 10,000 miles I owned it (hit 19mpg on a road trip). Comfort is much better than Taco plus loads of space. However, it won't fit on any trails (without serious potential...
Go crazy with it. Fit some 37s with as little lift as possible. Make it a go anywhere rock crawler / camping / adventure rig. If you wanted a true "expedition" rig this is a poor base... Weak motor, not comfortable, tiny gas tank, limited storage, noisy. Build it for what it does best...
That's awesome! I was looking through some pictures of your rig from years ago. It's looking much more capable now. Yes, let's get out on the trail soon. :)

It should be noted that the factory CVs are way stronger than aftermarket. You need to have people clarify if they broke OEM CV or aftermarket.
I ran my 1992 on 33x12.5s with the front bump stops cut in half and tbars cranked to 3-3.5" lift (nearly no downtravel). Never broke a CV. Of...
Wow! Fantastic write up... That's the best I've seen.
The rope trick is clever if you don't have an air compressor. I've swapped the valve stem seals on several monteros just hooking up an air compressor to each cylinder.
There have only been a small number of reported issues on the early production 4.0L motors. Most of them have over 100k on them. I've read that the HG was improved around 07. This not a widespread issue. It's similar to the early production 3.4L the first year or so had a number of HG...
