    Question on Timbren bump stops...

So you've never driven a mid-80's Ford Broco? That was a fairly "loose control" experience for me... ;)

    GMT800 Suburban Differentials?

On GMT800, Z71 didn't get you anything worth holding out for... Shocks, skid plates, and possibly the rear G80 standard, but that's about it. Shocks have likely been replaced anyway, skid plates are about worthless on GMT800's, and you already had the G80 coming... If your truck doesn't...

YJ/TJ for Desert Overlanding? Have you experienced heat soak problems?

My TJ (well, really an LJ, more or less...) will occasionally run rough when first started if I shut it off right after working it hard when it's hot out. It cranks for a few seconds extra, and stumbles a bit, but it smooths out quickly so I don't worry about it. If I remember to key it on for...

    Jeep Grand Cherokee

Fly and buy? CO Springs FB Marketplace ad... Couple more in the Denver area, and Albuquerque. do your own search. :) Interestingly enough, on all of the 4.0L Laredo GC's on FB MP where I could see the T-case shifter, it was a 242... Perhaps the 242 was standard on the '99-2004 GC's with...

    Tire chain retrofit

Ha, I've reparied plenty of broken crosslinks with a wirefeed mig welder and cheap chain. It works fine! The new links aren't hardened, but for off road use, it won't matter at all. Happy exploring!! :)

    Jeep Grand Cherokee

Are you really on PEI? If so, I assume that's a sort of outlier of the rust belt, where older vehicles seemingly disintegrate out from under you as they age... I'm from Michigan, and at this point it would be near impossible to find a ZJ or even a WJ that was in decent condition back...

    custom a/ts, redneck style

I bought a knife as a way to extend the usable mileage from my tires, and to improve the snow performance of non-3-peak rated tires. I deepen the grooves that are shallow when the tire hits about 50%. Seems to get me one more winter of good traction even though the tread depth is starting to...

Aggressive all terrain or less aggressive all mud terrain?

I should also say that I'm a fan of tall/skinny, or at least not wide tires. Better mileage, better winter performance on the road, easier on suspension and steering parts. I have a set of 235/85R16's on our Comanche and it does great. It also has limited HP to turn the tires, so the...

Aggressive all terrain or less aggressive all mud terrain?

An old thread, but WTH... I have long been a Cooper guy, and have run AT3's and ST Maxx's. More more recently I tried a set of Courser CXT's on my truck and Jeep. They're pretty good tires, though not much better in snow and ice than the Cooper tires that I've run. (None are 3PMS...

    1986 GMC S-15

Man, I love your updates Andrew. A little truck, a little life, and a lot of just good reading! From a while back, I recall you were going to school, for engineering I think... Still working for some sort of DOT organization I assume? Did you get your degree? Hopefully life is working out...

Pop up truck camper, no AC. How to install a 5K BTU window unit?

Here's something to consider... I just recently invested in a 1500W pure sine inverter for the truck. My truck burns about .4gal/hr of diesel idling and running the inverter with minimal house loads on it. (I am using it as my backup power supply for the house.) For draws like A/C...

Thickness and dimensions of aluminum frame in Four Wheel Camper

Nice looking setup! I'm with Alloy; you don't need to crank on the through-bolts, just remove the "slop" and give them a half a turn or so more. If you're cranking on them like they're lug nuts, you're way over-doing it. Use nylock nuts so they don't come loose, since you can't rely on...

Converting to manual locking front hubs

Seems nobody answered your questions... CAD is Center Axle Disconnect. GM and Dodge/Ram trucks use it instead of any sort of "locking hub" to disconnect most of the front driveline, or more precisely, the most power robbing parts of the front driveline... CAD uses a sliding splined coupler...

'86 Comanche Long bed, Slow build...

Not much to update on the Comanche. We spent a weekend up high a few months ago and had a nice time. The truck did heat up as we were climbing off the highway near Lizard Head Pass. The coolant reservoir was right full... I had just changed the temp sensor before we left, so I blamed it...

    TJ hydro boost brake upgrade

Your reference to a "hard pedal" would typically suggest a booster problem. You may find that your vacuum booster is simply in need of replacement. TJ's generally have pretty good boosters, and you should not be getting a hard pedal unless you have converted to a diesel and the vacuum pump is...

    Snow chains for offroad use.

IdaSHO's advice to air down is also great, but I don't do it that way... Lowering tire pressure makes the ride 10x better with chains, and further increases your traction. Both things are welcome if you must drive for miles with chains on. (This is obviously not highway use advice...) I have...

    Snow chains for offroad use.

Assuming your RV is a dually, you may have the choice to run single or dual chains on the back. (Depends on the amount of room between the tires...) If there isn't much room, your only choice are the dually chains that have links that span over both tires with no center chain. I have run...

    DANA 60 mod

I had looked into this at one time. There are several 5psi electric pumps that could do this. It would help the axle, but in times where I sat in deep water for a while, the axle housing was usually ok while the hubs were full of water. No way to easily pressurize the hubs, so I quit caring...

    DANA 60 mod

The water drains out of the tubes plenty fast anyway, since they are completely open on the ends... Wheeled a LOT in college and we all had solid axle rigs. None of us had issues with river crossings or the like, only when submerged for significant time at fairly impressive depth did we get...

Converting to manual locking front hubs

I can't offer much about the kits, aside from not having heard anything bad about any of them. What I can offer is that many of the earlier Dodge trucks that these conversions went on had no disconnect on the front axle, so unlocking the hubs actually stopped everything from turning. (No CAD...
