I need to upgrade my truck to a 250/2500

Sure, I get that. But when the sum of your GAWRs is 1,000lb higher than your GVWR, you probably don’t need to worry about being over GVWR by 500-600 lb. Interesting. I’m not saying they’re the best in the segment, but my brakes are still like new and have always been great, especially...

I need to upgrade my truck to a 250/2500

My ‘21’s brakes are awesome. I’m at 35k miles total. I’d maybe have yours checked out. Don’t assume that because the 4Runner’s brakes leave a lot to be desired that your truck’s brakes are supposed to be the same.

I need to upgrade my truck to a 250/2500

Yeah the truck would have to work for it. I wouldn’t expect it to pull like an I6 Cummins diesel. To be clear, if I towed over 7500 lb all the time, it wouldn’t be with a half ton. But for the occasional heavy load, I have no problem trusting my Tundra at its tow rating.

I need to upgrade my truck to a 250/2500

This raises an interesting question. Not only are they not held liable at all, there is in fact a *complete* lack of regulation regarding private half-ton and midsize trucks to go with this expansive aftermarket of companies willing and able (without liability) to bolt lots of unnecessary stuff...

    Towing a 16ft Airstream with a 4runner? Other alternatives?

This is the Toyota section, so I hope people don’t get too upset if I post this here: I would go with a 2nd Gen tundra. These positively prehistoric trucks are capable of being ridden hard and put up wet for hundreds of thousands of miles. The trucks that went a million miles with no issues ran...

What direction did you head when you outgrew your 4runner?

I have thought of finding a nice older 4Runner to daily and just using the Tundra for hunting, backcountry exploration, and towing duties. I’ve always liked the 4Runner platform.

Strength of a truck bed, 2.5 Gen Tundra to be specific.

I have TC bed stiffeners on my Tundra. They do exactly what you need.

What direction did you head when you outgrew your 4runner?

Agreed with everything you said. Tandem Offroad is (or was?) working on a fuel tank for the 2G Sequoia.

Full timing: keep my Tacoma and get a nicer camper, or trade for a Tundra and get a beater camper?

I’ve been watching several models of vehicles on CarGurus over the last couple of months. Everything—including >2 year old HD trucks—has dropped in price by thousands of dollars. It seems that inventory has all but stopped moving, and prices are correcting to reflect that. Nothing is a good deal...

What direction did you head when you outgrew your 4runner?

The 3rd gen Sequoia has really sold me on the 2nd gen. I hate that new one went backwards with the transfer case, cargo room, and rear window. I’m just looking for the right well-cared-for model. If you check out Fuelly averages, it’s more like 14 vs 17 overall. Not quite so bad.

    Ideal vehicle dimensions

Ideal dimensions to me are a Hilux or a 79series LC crew cab. Neither of which you can get in the US. Midsize with one-ton payload for all the gear. Well maybe the LC isn’t midsize but it’s not the size of my tundra, either. there’s a reason midsize trucks in the rest of the world have HD...

Is It Worth @ $30k to Make Your Newer Taco Look Old ? ?

Worth it to me? No. I think those look weird. But that’s my opinion. Someone else may have a different opinion. Doesn’t mean they’re “compensating” for something. They probably just enjoy different things than me.

    Ram 2500 long term reliability

My truck's GVWR is 7200 lb. The GAWRs are 4000/4150 front/rear. There's nearly 1000lb difference between GVWR and combined GAWRs. With 600lb of us in the cab and 1100lb on a good weight distributing hitch, it would be close. Truck's curb weight is 5930lb.

    Ram 2500 long term reliability

Not sure I agree with this. You would be well within your towing and gross combined weight capacities, but you would be over payload. Or at least, I would be over payload in your truck with my family. If that trailer is loaded to max GVWR, and the tongue weight is 1100 lb, then you only have...

    Ram 2500 long term reliability

That sucks. Especially if you bought it new so you have to wait around for the dealership to take care of it all for you under warranty. Warranty work might be included in the purchase price of your truck, but it is expensive in terms of the time you spend waiting on it to be done without being...

    Ram 2500 long term reliability

I’m in a Tundra, so I get it. Lol. My perspective has been that I’d rather pay for gas and go anywhere I want and come back every single time than have to deal with repairs on a regular basis.

    Ram 2500 long term reliability

Gross weight 7600, Curb weight 5400, tongue weight 700. 30’ long. But that tongue weight has got to be completely empty. Loaded up, I’d imagine it’s closer to 1000lb. This would put me over payload with my family of 5 plus our dog in the truck. Sucks. It’s well within my towing and GCWR limits.

    2500/3500 Ram/Chevy/Ford??

    Dang. Sorry to hear it.

    Ram 2500 long term reliability

Agreed. This will be my family’s first travel trailer. Its gross weight is well within my truck’s tow rating, and my GCWR would be within my truck’s limits, too. But the tongue weight loaded up would put me over payload.

    Ram 2500 long term reliability

Thanks for the info. That is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm not sure I would need a diesel. It seems like the only real benefit is towing heavy like @billiebob said or towing at altitude. I have read a lot on the Ram forum. There aren't a lot of users with the same kind of experience that...
