    Ram 2500 long term reliability

Looking like my needs might be changing, and I will be moving to an HD rig. If the Power Wagon had more payload, I’d probably go in that direction. As it is, I’m looking at a Tradesman 2500 crew cab shorter bed. I have zero experience with HD trucks. I’m looking for long term experiences...

Best value these days: 4Runner or GX460?

GX’s gross is higher, but its curb is even higher. Edmunds has a 2016 GX at 6500 GVWR/1400 max payload with the 4Runner at 6300 GVWR/1625 max payload. Door jambs will vary, but generally speaking the GX has less room to gross rating because it has a much higher curb weight. GX is rated to tow...

Best value these days: 4Runner or GX460?

If anything, they’re probably lower on the payload. Same platform, same GVWR with more options, heavier engine, etc… That said, I’d probably still go for the GX.

Is a Land Cruiser really better off-road than a Tacoma? My experience says the opposite..

Different people prefer different vehicles for different uses. The LC is built for a 25- or 30-year service life. I love Tacomas, but I was sorely disappointed when I learned that it took a left turn away from the Hilux and began to be geared toward comfort and manners instead of payload and...

    2014 Toyota Tundra SR5 Build

I’m on 285/75R18 with a 2” lift up front. They fit great. I get a bit of rub when off camber, but I didn’t trim or do a CMC. I did remove those little flaps in front of the front wheels.

What is gained by a gas 3/4-1 ton over 1/2 ton truck?

Payload. Towing capacity. Except the Power Wagon, the soft articulating suspension and extra goodies drops all of them to around 1500lb, which is barely more than a well-optioned half ton crew cab. I do think they’re cool, though. Probably a lot of fun on a trail. If I needed more truck than my...

What direction did you head when you outgrew your 4runner?

Agreed on the Sequoia. The new one is what made me take a harder look at the 2nd gen. What a sleeper of a vehicle: loads of room, center torsen diff that can run 4wd locked or unlocked (basically like full time 4wd) or 2wd, the classic Toyota rear window, and the drivability of a much smaller...

What direction did you head when you outgrew your 4runner?

Tundra here. Family of 5 plus a dog. We were cramped in the 4Runner but now we all have loads of room. Considering a 2nd gen Sequoia as well for my wife.

help me decide Toyo at III or Duratracs

Yeah, I guess they are a bit lighter comparatively. I can get 16mpg combined on 285/75R18s in my 5.7L Tundra. That's hand calculated and accounting for the 8.4% larger tire diameter.

help me decide Toyo at III or Duratracs

I too am a huge fan of Duratracs. I have 25k miles on mine, and they aren’t loud at all yet. I keep waiting for them to be because I have read this complaint often. I have also read that frequent rotations even out the wear that causes road noise, so I rotate mine every 3-4K miles. I’m guessing...

Pitchblack Motorsports - 2010 Sequoia rally support and light adventure rig

I'm assuming that because of the shorter wheelbase, you can't put a Tundra 38 gal tank in it. These guys say they have a fuel tank in the works for the 2nd gen Sequoia: GEN 2 Sequoia keeps up with all of the Toyotas Fall series Ep.2

When to trade up? The economics of "new" vs "old"

My buddies who drive EB F150s are frustrated by that. It is a design flaw. One of my hunting buddies has snapped a few manifold bolts over the years. Just from mild off roading getting to his lease. All the weight of those turbos hanging on the manifolds. The tell-tale ticking of an exhaust leak...

What Toyota truck for Box Camper build?

But there is one gas engine truck that has shown it can go that far or much farther on only routine maintenance, and that is the 2nd gen Tundra. That’s what is so appealing to me about the Tundra. I’d rather run the it a bit overweight knowing it will still be extremely dependable. Some people...

Hybrid or Gas for full-time camper? MPG guesses?

That’s exactly why I chose 285/75s…they clear stock UCAs on the stock wheels and don’t rub anywhere with the Pro suspension’s 2” lift up front. I can get 16 mpg combined if I baby it. But I’m usually at 14.

Hybrid or Gas for full-time camper? MPG guesses?

Agreed. I am assuming proper upgrades were made all around where possible (suspension, brakes, maybe even boxing in the C channel rear frame, etc). But at the end of the day, the Tundra’s rear axle is still a semi-floating design. To me, that is the weak link that can’t be beefed up, and those...

Hybrid or Gas for full-time camper? MPG guesses?

There are two overlander flatbed truck camper Tundras with YouTube channels that sit at 9k lbs empty. One channel is called Bound For Nowhere if you want to look them up. Their “Lost & Found” series is actually pretty cool. 9k lbs on a 2nd gen Tundra…that’s 850lbs above combined GAWRs. They’ve...

Am I insane for buying a used 200-series right now?

Did you buy something, OP? Or did fuel prices keep you in the beater Prius?

Tired of Old Junk but no Interest in Newer 4x4s

Save your pennies and seek out a manual Tacoma. The general consensus is that it doesn’t suffer from the same gutless feeling as the auto trucks. Or, the very first year 5th gen 4Runner had a manual option if I remember correctly. 2010. I think it came with a 4cyl. Kind of a bummer! Pretty rare.

    2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2

Agree with a lot of this. Frustrating that the fuel tank is so small, but if it had a 38 gallon fuel tank instead of 24, they’d have to subtract another ~100 lbs (fuel at 6lb/gal plus larger tank weight) right off that 1400 lb of payload number.

Why I switched from a Tacoma to an F150

You’re right about the 99 Ford. It was new tech at the time. It has also largely proven itself. I come from a long line of Ford only people. Extended family included. Older Fords (like late 90s to 2011ish) in my experience lasted longer with fewer issues. Were they less powerful? Sure. Fewer...
