Yes, you are missing something. A tounge-in-cheek jab at a previous poster's spelling error.

They've been trying to sell that Bad Boy for a long time. There has been at least on thread on it sometime way back. Bet they would 'accept a reasonable offer.'

Wow, after really hijacking the thread I discovered we (maybe just I?) have really been muddying the waters. Good thing I pointed out I'm no expert. Twice. :) My apologies, but please allow me one additional post to try to straighten things out. Even though it's lengthy. Maybe a clear...

Again, I don't claim to be an expert, so in deference to Mr. Ritter, I did go back to the referenced link. It takes me to the EquippedToSurvive main page, not a specific article. So I searched 'PLB' on his site, and still did not find that specific presentation. I did, however, find a paper in...

Speeling miseaks I don't pretend to be an expert, but the most succinct summary I'm aware of comes from FCC Order FCC 02-271, the document establishing (legalizing) PLB use under Part 95. In a nutshell, PLBs communicate with a satellite system called SARSAT. SARSAT is monitored by NOAA...

    Action Mobil at Houston Airport

Isn't the 'Eco Park' a parking lot for waiting for arrivals? A place to sit and wait for a cell call instead of wasting gas circling the airport? The name of the park says nothing about the vehicles.

Nothing against Mr. Ritter, but I'm more inclined to read the FCC rulings, which mandate that inland beacon distress calls be routed to the local SAR management, normally the Sheriff's office. My arguement is that going through the dispatcher contacts the Sheriff faster than having the USAF do...

Yeah, I've been following your adventures for years, and somewhere along the line I figured out that you are 'local.' Right now I only exist online, but if I ever materialize as a real overlander, or you start a new build based on one of these vehicles, I think we should definetly meet... :)

I agree with you overall, but if I may pick a nit... The SAR groups I am aware of / served on (US/CO) are under the auspices of the Sheriff's department, and are called to action by that department. So it seems to me a call to 911 or a call to the USAF are both going to result in info being...

Intro and Our Mercedes Vario Home -Gen rack pg.5. Ideas on uprating rear suspension?

Really? I can see welding up the diff on a pure mudding truck, but on a vehicle that will see pavement 90% of the time? On a solid surface I think you really need those back wheels to be able to spin at different speeds, or something is going to break. It seems to me welding the spider gear...

Doug, you got me to searching that Commercial Truck Trader site, and I found this '90 Doka Unimog. Not sure if it qualifies as 'low cost,' though, at $75K...

    Sportsmobile Fuso

I mentioned before that I thought their cabinet construction was SIP, but I should reiterate I'm not 100% on that. I remember years ago at an RV show they had cutaway samples of the floor and wall sections. I thought that they said that the cabinets were built in the same way for strength and...

    Sportsmobile Fuso

And don't forget that this rig was designed to fit in an ISO container. The Holy Grail for me would be a rig that fits in a container for shipping and storage, and has all hard walls, yet has room for a family of four, including seating in the cab (doka). I would be willing to give up the...

    Sportsmobile Fuso

The swinging upright supports are attached to torsion bars underneath the camper to counter the weight. I've always thought the Trailmanor design was pretty cool. I've only seen them at dealerships, but the torsion bar system seems to work really well.

    1981 G-Wagen camper on eBay

12k miles on an ex-military rig seems too good to be true, for one thing. Maybe 12k miles since the Europa import/conversion, since they probably installed a US speedo (and the mileages are listed as Miles, not Kilometers)? Besides, I didn't think Eurpoa dealt with military surplus trucks, but...

    Sportsmobile Fuso

When I heard that Sportsmobile was doing a Fuso chassis, I was really anxious to see what they came up with. Now having seen the pix on the OX12 threads, I have to say I'm kind of disappointed. Seems like all they did was basically winch a Trailmanor SportDeck trailer up on the Mitsu chassis...

If you're not talking HAM, and can do without built-in GPS, check out the Midland-75-510XLM It's your basic 14-channel FRS, but with an external mag-mount antenna. When transmitting from a vehicle, the external antenna should give you a little better range.
