Agreed but good choice of gears can help correct the issue.

Comment is based on Gas Mileage and what there is to work with in the 4.0 2nd Gen.

    I agree with this.

    Gear Ratios

Yes, there were some people posting about the 4.0, I wanted to be sure that other posters out there know there are other options than really tall gears. This is because both on this site and TW there are always post about why bad gas mileage with xxx gear setup...

    Gear Ratios

That's why I posted the gears link. It should have been 4.10s but Toyota chose 3.73s which a lot looking at gear forget the 6cyl vs 4cyl use different gearing. All 2nd gen v6 have 3.73 to start. I'm just pointing out that one shouldn't jump into tall gears without other considerations and some...

    Gear Ratios

Yes 3.73 starting point on 2nd gen 4.0. 4.30s take into account weight increases. The 2nd gen stock transmissions is the RA60 and then after 2010 I think the RA60F. Actually the truck should have been built stock with 4.10s but I'm sure epa/economy was a major factor.

    Gear Ratios

I had similar results. With 4.10s you'll see 18mpg. With 4.30s I've had as good as 22mpg. It really is also one must target their driving habits and style. I'm in a lot of stop and go where torque is desirable to move the extra mass you mentioned. However when not in stop and go I drive like I...

    Gear Ratios

It's the RPM range changes. I guess if you don't plan highway driving more than 4.30...might be ok. Also my comments are based on manual transmission. The website I linked does an excellent job of showing rpms in each gear. For Toyota targets is around 2200-2300rpm for decent gas mileage...

With those gear ratios above 4.30...just don't post about poor gas mileage. LOL

    Is the Tacoma enough truck?

Ha! I drive it like I stole it. Always high rpms even unloaded. I live at 7000ft inclines of 6 to 16%....I figure that is what keeps the 4.0 healthy, lol! @175k miles and I still trust it to take me to Montana and back no questions....

    Is the Tacoma enough truck?

My guess that would be a very interesting lawsuit. Laws haven't caught up to the non-commercial overweight. But truth is a lot of people would probably not try to counter? As I stated in another post. I've invested in lots of updates that improve on original gvwr...there should be a process to...

    Is the Tacoma enough truck?

Wow! I would say in my travels I see a lot over weight. I did a lot of upgrades...I wish there was a way to re-evaluate after someone improves the original vehicle.... I am on the edge but with updates not even noticeable.

    Is the Tacoma enough truck?

I guess that also assumes I was using it "Commercially."

    Is the Tacoma enough truck?

I'm not a fan of 8ft beds....My job doesn't require and parking in CA is hell enough with a 6ft.

    Is the Tacoma enough truck?

I'm within GVWR with 1 person and dog. When I go 2 people I'm over...but not by much that I would be concerned. The Key of the setup is the use of a trailer. Low tongue weight get to pull more stuff.

    Is the Tacoma enough truck?

Gearing gets you into the able to drive legal speed limits. The ONLY place I have an issue is that damn 4-5 mile up hill on I15 into LV. LOL! But that has a slow truck lane so not a big deal... I go back and forth on if I should of gotten the SC. Sometimes I say I wish I had it other times I...

    Is the Tacoma enough truck?

I'm WAY late to this discussion. However, my 2c is the Tacoma is more than capable with a few minor modifications. I haul a FWC and tow 2-3 motorcycles no problem after modifications. (Suspension, brakes and gearing). My build out still comes way under the cost of just a full size diesel or...

Want to switch to an oversized wool blanket for my pop-up camper. Suggestions?

I'm late to the discussion but I use/keep 3 wool blankets in my FWC. 2 of Mine were purchased in UT on an Indian Reservation the 3rd is a Pendleton...honestly the blankets from the reservation are holding up much better. Though the colors ran a bit when washed...
