    Reliability v ease of repairs?

You can have both (reliability and ease of repairs) in an older (40 or 60-series) Land Cruiser; the trade-off is the lack of modern comfort, safety, and speed - but they're reliable and dead easy to work on with minimal tools. Everything is easy to get to as well. Most mechanical parts readily...

Yes, I realize that. I like to keep a log of all my contacts though.

    2m mobile rig recommendations?

Since you already like Yaesu, seems like the FTM-400DR would be a good fit. I like Yaesu, once you figure out how to read the manual! My current mobile radio is a Kenwood TM-D710A and it is excellent for plug 'n play APRS and a nice dual band/dual receive radio otherwise. They are somewhat...

    Desert FJ. A new beginning.

Good plan to drive it first and then only modify as needed. Most spend people spend way too much for mods they rarely use or don't really need; some just for the look. You will be surprised how far a stock FJC will take you off-road.

    Tire and Wheel Options Needed

Well it's been 2-3 years since I bought the BFG KM2's that are on my 40 now. I guess it would pay to ask at your local dealer if they can get them or not. I bought mine at Discount Tire. I've run the Toyo AT and MT tires on other trucks and they were very good tires too, and lasted nearly...

    Tire and Wheel Options Needed

Don't know about your 16" options, but BFG and Toyo still make 33x10.5x15 tires in AT and MT. Fits fine on stock 40 wheels. Tons of guys run these (myself included).

What have you done to your Land Cruiser Today?

Me too! The only chrome on mine are the hub caps and the side emblems.

    HiLux gets new diesel

And even more importantly (IMO), it generates 80% of peak torque at only 1200 rpm. The F and 2F are great long-stroke wheeling motors; not surprising since that is what they were designed for. But they only make 200 ft. lbs. peak torque, and only about 12 mpg on-road. The new turbo diesel...

What do you put in your peli case?

A new one with nice foam for camera equipment; several other cheap military surplus ones (with no or removed foam) for portable HF ham radio & equipment, PowerTank hoses and chucks, etc., electrical repair tools and supplies.

    Why do I want APRS???

Personally I like and do both of those, but contesting and fox hunting (among others) just drive me bonkers. The amateur radio hobby is so big and diverse that there is room for every taste I guess.

OK, now that you mention it, it does look wide for a pig. Looks like a lot of custom work there.

    Help - High SWR reading

Not enough ground plane available at that location. Try a half-wave antenna; they don't need much if any ground plane.

    Why do I want APRS???

Makes my wife feel better, to be able to see where I am in real time, just by checking a web page. I've also used it to to find and meet an internet friend in the middle of the San Juan Mountains - my GPS (connected to my APRS radio) is able to navigate to any other APRS-enabled ham operator. A...

    Added guages

I added a tachometer, and replaced the ammeter with a volt meter. The tach is good for keeping my truck in its power band, particularly on steep mountain roads. The volt meter gives more useful information than the ammeter, and the ammeter wouldn't work with the higher-output alternator that I...

Those of you with Limb Risers and HAM antennas

There's not much ground plane on a tire carrier, but it can be done with a 1/2-wave antenna. The 2 meters antenna on one of my trucks is on the spare carrier, but it doesn't have near the range or performance as my other truck with a 1/4-wave antenna on the (metal) roof.
