    Overland Expo West, 2014

Preparations are coming along. The Camel Trophy guys have a new scheme: There's a new, larger, stepped hole for marshaling: And, of course:

    Solar question

Global solar was bought by Hanergy and is doing fine. The 100-watt Powerflex modules Brian and I both have are here. We have two on our FWC and they work superbly. Jdinevens, I'll bet your system is okay if you got back up to 13.6 volts fairly quickly with no load. With no charge and no draw...

    Bogert safe jack, bottle jack

    Ah . . . I misconstrued your patient remark . . .

    Bogert safe jack, bottle jack

You're going to have to wait until the Overland Expo if you're attending, or some time after it if not.

    Bogert safe jack, bottle jack

Guys, I talked to Richard Bogert. He was already planning to have a 15 percent off pricing promotion at the Overland Expo. Once that's over, he says he'll extend a similar code I can post here.

    Saddleback Leather briefcase

Sure, Lance: This is representative. Inside is my Mac Air (my old 15-inch Powerbook also fit), a pistol case with an HK P2000 inside, my Leica 10x42 binos, two field guides, an iPhone and power brick. More would fit, but this fits easily.

    Saddleback Leather briefcase

I have a medium Saddleback briefcase guaranteed to hold up to anything, and this one has. Many trips, much scratching and patina, but still 100-percent functional of course. It will hold a laptop and all the extra stuff you need for a major trip. They sell for $568 new; I thought I'd list it...

    Best Tool Kit for Overlanding?

That sounds reasonable. I'm just wondering what kind of panel could jump-start three dead vehicles in 20 minutes.

    Best Tool Kit for Overlanding?

As someone who lives on solar power and is pretty familiar with PV panels, I'm very curious how you accomplished this? What wattage was the panel, etc.?

    Micro-Start XP-1

And six-gauge is pretty thin. In any case, there's an important accessory you need to make jumper cables work that you don't with the Micro-start: another vehicle.

    Micro-Start XP-1

It's here for $116. I've seen it on sale for as low as $99.

    Micro-Start XP-1

Todd, the XP-1 is the wrong voltage for a Mac laptop, I was disappointed to discover (19 volts rather than the 16 Apple uses, IIRC). But it should work on an iPhone with the right adapter.

    Micro-Start XP-1

I just received a Micro-Start XP-1 from Antigravity batteries, and gave it a good workout. It's an impressive piece of kit, and could well render your jumper cables obsolete. The review is up on OT&T.

Adventure Tools Company - Map Case

Paul and Amy are making an excellent tool roll as well. I reviewed it on OT&T here.

How do you store your (deep) sockets?

That shot in the upper left of Paul's post is the roll I just tested, here. It's a quality piece of kit.

How do you store your (deep) sockets?

I like the Ernst Manufacturing socket rails, which can be set up as a mix-and-match holder for 3/8 and 1/2-inch sockets. I too find it useful to have a selection of deep sockets; however, I've found that about 90 percent of the applications I've needed them for fall within the 10mm to 15mm...
