you don't want central tyre inflation Peter ........... it would last about 30 seconds in some of the squeezy places you've sent me to. Nice in the Sahara (I did dream of it) but I think impractical in Aus. Unless you know of a setup that doesn't clip on the outside centre of hub.
PPPS mobile phone, satphone (people calling me see it as a mobile), PLB. And I have a torque multiplier, but its very heavy.
Useful is a "single point of contact". My daughter takes on the role of "remote area recovery coordinator". Able to put herself in our shoes and make sensible decisions...
PPS a couple of lengths of 50x3mm steel strip. With small U-bolts, useful for clamping things - last time I broke a spring main leaf behind the axle, good for 1,000km at 10 km/hr ..... did I mention hacksaw?
I've noticed that what I carry depends on the country and the length of the journey. 6...
PS some webbing ratchet straps of a couple of widths/loads. A really big one for if a main leaf in spring breaks between axle and front pin. Little ones for all sorts.
all of the above, less hi-lift (I think they are unsafe), plus
hydraulic and scissor jacks (I'd love one of those old Holden low profile mechanical bottle jacks,
lots of different tapes, duct tape, cloth tape, tennis court tape, VHB double sided tape, insulating tape, ptfe tape, self...
still a nice idea though ........
I'm waiting for wheel based motors with independent traction control! Get rid of all that clunky transmission stuff.
Depends on the rig roads, they've usually been travelled by heavy things. Seismic tracks are a different kettle of fish, but still they've...
is any brake fluid being lost (however slowly)? Any signs of oil leaks or grease or fluid around the back of the drums? Any creek crossing before shaking? A source of pulsing can be brake shoes grabbing. I assume the hubs were free?
some simple (silly) questions. Do you feel anything through the brake pedal? With wheel jacked up is brake adjustment "uneven" .... can you feel it grab as wheel rotated. How violent is the shaking? (Someone recently described shaking front end as being "quite bad" which really meant "impossible...
I think you don't have enough info to make assumptions about my tyres and how I operate. And didn't read earlier post.
Simple maths. Draw a circle around the circumference of the tyre. Draw a circle across the tread. The second circle is smaller. It will deform less as the tyre pressure is...
its easy to measure the footprint, the area of tyre in contact with ground, at different pressures. Depends on the tyre I guess, but as I lower the pressure i my Toyos there's negligible increase in width in contact with road, and heaps of increase in length. The curve of the tyre lengthways is...
here's a short (1 minute) video of 4.5 tonnes on 19.5" 285/70R19.5 at around 25 psi in Simpson dune sand (up east side). A little lower needed for "little red". Walked back for a look see if there were any little hills in the tracks (wheel spin).

probably wrong forum but I couldn't find the right one.
One of the videos highlighted in the top band on the portal caught my eye. Driving in sand tracks.

It surprised me that no mention was made of tyre pressures.
My limited...
Replace vee belts with Mitsubishi parts I've been carrying around for 5 years.
I have old belts labeled 12.5x1185 (two for alternator drive) and 12.5x1450 for aircon.
"Standard" vee belt profiles include "A" 13mm wide by 8mm deep.
what size vee belts do I need?
PS I'm guessing Gates V Belt...
probably getting off topic ...... into the more general "to have a computer or not?" ..... there was a thread a few months ago, UK based Canter wouldn't start. Local garages wouldn't touch it. Owner desperate enough to consider selling. Limited knowledge of vehicle but capable of good...
you may recall
just a trade off between "some electronic diagnostics but potential computer says no" and "trial and error fault finding". Regardless of which vehicle having faults while away from home can be challenging, most important bit is to sufficiently understand the vehicle.
