Boxtruck or Van - Soft RTW trip

Van is more comfortable to drive, easier to park, easier to get serviced, cheaper to ferry, less likely to get stuck in low traction situations like wet grass or ice, gets better fuel mileage, has no need for a passthrough and is less conspicuous. Box truck is roomier, easier to build-out, and...

    Making a standard Gen Quieter

Being out on the water makes sound carry very well. Two boats moored a few hundred yards apart can converse between them quite normally if the water is calm and ambient noise is scarce. It acts like an amplifier. It's why Jesus gave sermons from a boat to crowds on the shore. That trait of water...

    Tire advice on quigley ambulances?

    I run 225/75-16 Cooper HT3s. They're 29.25" on a 6" rim. 255/85-16 Cooper St Max are 33". Awesome tires

Sprinter 4WD Conversion Idea, GMT-800 IFS.

Driveshaft length plays a large role in angularity.

377 on the RTI, is that good?

Close. If you were correct about it being multiplied, a longer wheelbase would be a benefit. Instead, it's divided into the distance traveled up the ramp, so it's a detriment. It makes sense because if it were factored differently the ramp would essentially be a case of "longest wheelbase wins."...

Fridge Advice - Weird space to fill

Explaining this to the little woman and found her response enlightening. "So the AC fridge would need more than 2 solar panels and the DC fridge takes less than 1?" She's referring to 100 watt solar panels. She's hazy on how it all works together but the way she sees through to watts vs watts...

377 on the RTI, is that good?

A longer wheelbase is a detriment to ramp scores but a wider track helps. If you want to boost your score, remove the front left bumpstop and the left rear shock. Disconnecting the sway bar(s) will help too. I've never put much stock in RTI. If you have a locked rear axle, you'll get where you...

Fridge Advice - Weird space to fill

That DC fridge at less than 30 watts is gonna be TOUGH to beat by anything on an inverter. A 240v Euro fridge at a ludicrously low number like 0.25 amps (more like an LED lamp than fridge) is still 60 watts without considering a very good inverter will lose 5%. 63 is a LOT more than 26.

Fridge Advice - Weird space to fill

Yes Energy Star ratings are dubious. That's why I included every other specification. So you'll buy a fridge and ship it from Europe? $$$ And need a Euro-spec inverter to get 240v AC @ 50 hz from 12v DC $$ A very expensive inverter, that will be difficult to replace when it dies and that...

Fridge Advice - Weird space to fill

Danby DCR044A2BDD-3 4.4 cubic foot dorm fridge Energy Star Rated 115v AC vs TruckFridge TF130 4.6 cubic foot mobile fridge 12v DC Most comparable models I found in a quick search. TF130 is intensely documented here and thesamba, etc. Amp draw is widely accepted as 2 amps when running...

E-Scooters. A really good van camping accessory.

I use Lime a lot. Very convenient for my job. They do not climb hills but I'm 6 ft and 240 lbs so there's that. One would be sweet at the campground but can't imagine one even being useful boondocking.

Ambulance 2wd regear for lower noise and better fuel economy?

Van c&c axles aren't terribly common and certainly not in 3.73 Changing tire height with an ambulance body isn't that simple Yeah trucks are quieter than vans That quiet 6.0 fan/clutch combo is quiet because it's weak. A few aftermarket companies adapt the bigger, more effective 7.3 parts to...

    AC while boondocking

My 1kw Sportsman initially would start my LG 5k btu AC from a dead cold condition when new but wouldn't restart it due to head pressure on the compressor increasing its locked rotor amperage. This is a common thing with AC and really not an unforeseen obstacle running one on the smallest...

Ambulance 2wd regear for lower noise and better fuel economy?

Once rolling, weight is of little effect given that mass is both a load and aids momentum. If frequent hill climbing is to be done, which I doubt given the OP's thoughts of regearing at all, I would discourage regearing but again, doesn't seem to be the case. The major consideration other than...

    AC while boondocking

Portables are as not efficient since the hot side is inside the van. That's why they have 2 btu ratings per unit. 1 hose portables turn your van into a low-pressure area and pull hot, humid outside air into your van. 2 hose portables have 2 hoses to bother with and radiate heat into the van...
