No worries - take your time. You may need break after that one :)
After reading the Isuzu thread, the obvious question (which may have been answered already) is why does ATW choose the Canter for most of their builds?
Fuso DP Chip
John, do you put the DP chip on all your conversions? How does it perform? Does it really improve fuel economy? Any down sides?
. . . . and most importantly will it work on my California truck??
No Bevel
That is what happened to me too. I had no time to send them back so I had to chamfer one side of the wheels myself. I sent them a copy of the bill for the expensive chamfer bit, but they never did anything about it. How pathetic that they continue to make the same mistake.
On the...
Congratulations/mpg
Very nice. I like the color.
That's good fuel economy. With my camper I averaged about 12.7 mpg at 60mph and 13.5 with the open sub-frame. I think the mpg takes a big hit from the mud tires. I'd like to find/make a roof fairing to see how much that can help.
I noticed...
max axle load
Hey John, what is the max axle load you'd recommend for the new Canter if running singles on rear?
I'm not running the stock wheels, but I'd like to use one as a spare, so I'm looking for a 35" tire that matches my Toyo's diameter. Any recommendations that would be available...
I totally agree vehicle dynamics are complicated and lots of things are going with the vehicle while going around a curve. I'm pointing out that the frame can flex while all four wheels are on level ground going around a curve and this might be reduced by rigidly attaching the camper over the...
Re:
Earl,
I'm not sure where the frame twists the most.
The first reason I put my fixed points in the front is I wanted to minimize the mismatch between the cab and the camper because I was going to make a permanent pass-thru. I will still have a pass-thru but through two independent windows...
Thanks Peter. The last year or so I've been too busy and other things to keep up with Forum. I just checked out some pictures of your build - very cool. More than ever I really appreciate the work and creativity it took to build your camper.
We'll have to get the West Coast Band of FG-ers...
The black in the picture is a bench top. I attached a cross-section of the frame design with the Barry Mounts assembled (not showing the large washers and bolts). Another picture of the welded parts that make the pivot. Check Rob Grey's site for an excellent approach and illustration to using...
Kerry, the pivot mount is designed around the rubber Barry Mounts - http://www.aektechnology.com/bcdi/bonded/pdf/22000%20Series.pdf
I originally found the product by way of Rob Grey's build. http://www.robgray.com/graynomad/wothahellizat/wot2/diaries/diary_06/index.php
The ones I used are...
Mosier
Ha!
Yeah that was me having breakfast at one of my favorite spots. My mom and sister live in Hood River. I nearly bought a piece of property in Mosier 5 years ago (d'oh d'oh d'oh).
I got the wheels at Stockton Wheels. You can probably seach the site for Shockton Wheels and find a lot...
Interior Pics
Any time Thom - working from home today and home most of the weekend.
Here are some interior pictures. It was used as a makeshift office this morning when my cleaning lady kicked me and one of my engineers out of the house. The sliding window in the front is offset so that...
Greetings. Just wanted to share an update on my camper project - it's about 80% complete (if complete is possible). I hope to share more detail/pics after completion in the next month or so.
As some of you are aware I lost my wife in a bicycle accident in June '08. This happened in the...
my wheels
I don't remember any markings - I'll have to check, but here is some info regarding the wheels I had Stockton build . . ..
The wheels are 16X “8” inches wide with an actual width of 9in. I was told the best they could achieve was a “backspace” of 7.74 inches (they adjusted my...
Nice job
It's great to see a new rig come to fruition - nice job Lehel.
I started working on mine again this last fall - maybe I'll have something to show in the next couple months. Can I borrow your ladder when you're finished :)
I'm in Ventura CA, so someday we'll have to meet in the...
Project progress . . .
After the White Rim trip I took a much needed break from the project. The plan was to get started again in June with the goal to be ready for a trip to Alaska next summer - 2009.
The project, and my life for that matter, has fallen to pieces. On June 19 my wife Hillary...
Truck w/ camper mpg
Maybe true for gasoline trucks, but that's going 75mph, not 55mph.
My '96 Dodge 3500 Dually-Cummins w/ 11' fully loaded Lance got 13-16mpg. Since it had the low gear option, it did better on slow twisty mountain roads at 50mph than on the freeway at 65. The newer...
Modifying stock springs
Has anyone considered modifying the existing stock spring stack to soften the ride?
Maybe it is possible to remove one or more leaves - I've heard of adding leaves.
Or maybe it's possible to alter the shape of the main leaf (grinder).
I want softer front leaf...
Umm, I think that's called the ideal gas law. (PV=nRT)
The formula assumes no volume change as the pressure increases, so maybe the pressure change won't be quite that much when starting with a low pressure tire.
The infrared thermometer is a great idea since the black tire surface should give...
