    Homemade expedition trailer build

Looking good man! Is the water jug the same "water tank" you mentioned, or you have a water tank inside plus that jug?

Project X - Just another Excursion Project

Looks like you're doing a great job. But why not buy a 4x4 7.3 excursion in good shape? This looks like a ton of work!

RTT Trailers - lidded tub vs pullout and cubbies

I built the tub style so I may be slightly biased... Construction was far more simple, that was a main reason. I built a telescoping tent rack, so access is no problem even with the tent deployed. I do think the cubby style trailers are neat and I like that everything has it's place, but like...

    Trailer paint

Good timing, I'm a week or two out from painting mine. Most likely, I'll sand blast it and paint the whole trailer with a Zinc primer. Then I'll paint the tub with a urethane enamel top coat, and coat the fenders, frame, running boards and tent rack with monstaliner. I wish there was an easier...

    McCool's basic trailer build

Decided to hook the trailer up to see how it looked. It sits pretty well.

    McCool's basic trailer build

The weight shouldn't be an issue, but I don't know about 3'-4' stroke. These were the longest I could find, ideally I wanted 25".

    McCool's basic trailer build

Well it hasn't been the most productive week but I've got a few things done since the last post. I mounted the awning I made the initial cuts and placed the floor in I finished the tailgate

    McCool's basic trailer build

Thanks! Sure thing, here's what I used. They have a 16" stroke and come in 50,100,150,200 or 250lb sizes. I'm using 4 of the 50 pound ones. I have one mounted on each post of the rack. The rack is made of 1" square tubing that slips into the 1.25" square uprights. Hopefully that explains it, if...

    McCool's basic trailer build

Since that weekend two weeks ago, im back to working on it 30 minutes at a time. Here's where I'm at currently. I finished the tent rack, it uses 50lb struts to lift. I also started on the tailgate, I'll take pics of that shortly.

    McCool's basic trailer build

In a couple pics above, you can see the 1"x2" I used for the top rail as well as the 1.25" uprights for my tent rack.

    McCool's basic trailer build

At this point I had only worked on it for 15 or 30 minutes at a time, But I knew the next step would be a long one. I borrowed a plasma cutter and wanted to get the box sides cut as well as build the running boards. All told, these steps took 7 or 8 hours over a weekend. The sides are 16 gauge...

    McCool's basic trailer build

Next, I ran the wires for the taillights. I also picked up a 3500lb dexter axle and wheels and tires that match my tahoe

    McCool's basic trailer build

My name is McCool and I'm building a trailer. I've gathered so much information from threads here, I thought I'd post my own build to contribute. Initially, I drew up extensive plans for a fancy teardrop style trailer. But with 4 kids, I realized I didn't want to invest 300+ hours into a build...

Tailgate and lid latches and hinges

That's the exact latch I used when I built a swing out tire carrier for my old jeep. It worked great.

Tailgate and lid latches and hinges

That sounds pretty solid, I thought they were just bolted underneath the frame. Yeah, I'm not sure if I want to mess with the striker/toolbox latch. I was hoping there was an option I hadn't come across yet. I like the flush mount though. Are you using any kind of seal around your tailgate?

Tailgate and lid latches and hinges

Thanks for the reply! I am considering that style of latch, seems like it will be the easiest option. I'm also considering the flush mount style found on truck toolboxes but that seems like more of a hassle. Your trailer is looking great! Those taillights look vulnerable though

Tailgate and lid latches and hinges

Thanks, yes they are. I wanted them to match my tahoe.

Not really relevant to my question, but here's how she sits currently

Tailgate and lid latches and hinges

Hello all, I'm at the point in my build where I need to decide on latches and hinges for my tailgate and lid. What's everyone using? I think I will probably use barrel hinges for both, but I'm lost when it comes to latches. Something lockable obviously. The lid will hinge from the front and I...
