This is a good discussion. I'm in the same boat. I just bought 4 wheels for my trailer that match my tow vehicle. They came with a perfect size set of BFG AT tires with 80%+ tread left. They are 7+ years old though. I only paid $200 for the set, so I'm fine with replacing the tires but it would...
I put new tires on it, so it looks a bit different from a stock tundra.
Haha I guess I should update my signature thing. The tundra is gone, I'm now in an 05' z71 tahoe.
I'm a*little concerned about my shackle angle. I have the mounts clamped at the recommended spacing. I know when I put the weight of the trailer on the axle, it will flatten out some but does this look acceptable without any weight on it?
My god this thread is ridiculous!
I had a Toyota for a long time, now I drive a 05' tahoe. Both IFS trucks. Both have taken me everywhere I want to go. I do miss the rattle free drive in the Toyota, my tahoe has some squeaks and rattles. Both have been reliable. Both have been comfortable...
I think they definitely have pros and cons. I have a full size suv. I'm building a trailer because we are a family of 6, And because I don't want my tent on top of my truck full time.
I can't speak to most of your questions though, as I haven't finished my trailer.
Thanks guys, very helpful.
I am in the DFW area. It seems southwest wheel is the best deal so far. I can pick up locally and save shipping. With springs, hangers, u bolts, and all hardware it's $200 without brakes or $320 with electric brakes.
I am gathering parts for a simple trailer build. I'm curious where people are getting their axles from. I'm looking for a 3500lb axle, 6x5.5 lug pattern to match my tahoe, with leaf springs and all necessary mounting hardware.
I've looked at etrailer, and Amazon, but I'm not finding exactly...
Lots of good info already. Like rayra said, parts are cheap and these are very easy vehicles to work on. But 300k is a lot, expect recurring issues.*
That said, id make a few trips in it (after fixing lifter issue) and verify that overland travel/camping is something you enjoy before dropping...
Henryj, are you only running wheel spacers in the rear? What's the reasoning behind that? Great looking avy by the way
I am running 1.25" wheel spacers by the way
Lots of good info guys, thank you. Sorry if it's a topic frequently discussed.
I am running the stock 17" wheels and will continue to do so. Unfortunately, the 285/75/17 size isn't a common one. I'd love to do the 34x10.5x17 ko2's but at >$300 a piece, it's not happening.
