Custom 35 gallon gas tank for '09 Tacoma

Amazing work! Should definitely draw some business to the shop that did such clean, well-engineered work

    What Radio?

I drove the Dalton Highway last summer. It was in great condition the whole way. Averaged 40 mph. Carried two spares and didn't need either. Carried a ton of tools and didn't touch them. Never went into 4WD. Did not have a radio. Had to stop many times for mega-oversize haul crews to come...

    Thread Adapter

http://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/118/3288/=g1tawi That's catalog page 3288, some other suitable products on page 3289. You want M8 internal, M12 external, but you need to figure out the thread pitch first as there are a couple in those sizes. Walk into a decent hardware store and they'll have...

Quick and easy mounting option for roof rack on shell

I added a third pair of mounting brackets, that was a necessary addition with the extended MegaWarrior and 6' bed. Without the extension over a 5' bed, probably not needed. I haven't needed any additional parts to hold the rack from moving side to side - pure clamping friction keeps it in...

Scepter Gas/Water can holder for roof rack?

I guess this doesn't fit the "over-engineered" theme of this board, but... I have a Yakima MegaWarrior on the roof, the width is just about right for three MFC/MWC flat on their sides. I do 4 MFCs and 2 MWCs in two rows, with the crossbar set for a tight fit lengthwise. A ratchet strap holds...

    K-Wrench for Scepter MFC caps

Got the K-wrench after having a really hard time opening some MFCs with a cheap strap wrench in a driving rain. A better strap wrench would probably work ok, but still nowhere as well as this tool

Using Cylinder Compression to Air up tyres?

You guys have never checked cylinder compression? Same idea. Unplug the injectors first, or if you like, just pull the fuel pump fuse and crank until it dies. That deals with the fuel problem. Then install the apparatus. I wouldn't take one in place of a good compressor but it makes for an...

Question re: 4 wheel disc brake conversion for Tacoma

Different but same size front discs will make zero difference. The Tacoma has good diameter discs with plenty of thickness. The calipers are a sturdy 2-piston design. The problem is the pads are too damn small. Go for a upgraded front caliper with much bigger pads, or save your money. SST...

Tranny cooler for a 2006 Tacoma?

Just clarifying some of the other posts - if you have a 2005+ with the factory tow package, you have a tranny intercooler stock. Cools the fluid if it gets hotter than radiator temp, heats it if it's colder than radiator temp.

Truck Cab & Camper Shell Roof Baskets & Rack Setups?

This is how I mounted rails and basket on the top of my truck cap: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/61639-Quick-and-easy-mounting-option-for-roof-rack-on-shell

Quick and easy mounting option for roof rack on shell

The cap is held to the bed's load rails at four spots with bolts. The cap can't spread. What the cap can do is shear a little left and right at the top, while the base remains in place. I have seen complaints from time to time that long-term heavy roof storage can lead to cracking in the...

    Tacoma at 12,500 ft

The public road ends at a locked gate two miles short of the research station at 11,300 ft. Highest camping spot I've found anywhere in California (I do a lot of acclimation camping/hiking for Sierra peak bagging). Silver Canyon Rd is a wonderfully tight and steep way to get up there, way more...

    Tacoma AT or MT?

My AT also does a confused downshift to third on a lot of inclines, where it'll hold speed in fifth with the CC off. Can't explain it but it's annoying. I had my AT fluid flushed at Toyota recently, at 130,000 miles. The shop called back when they were about to start the flush to confirm that...

    Taco for expedition living quarters

I just spent two months in mine in Alaska. Leer 180 cap, 8" of thermarest and foam mattress cut to fit full-width. Plank shelf across forward half of the bed, crates strapped in atop the planks, feet and sleeping bags go under the shelf. Can prop a laptop on the shelf and watch movies. Two...

Quick and easy mounting option for roof rack on shell

Good point. Thinking about tamper-resistant nuts (McMaster P/N 90080A260, http://www.mcmaster.com/#steel-tamper-resistant-nuts/=ddrvle ) Drove from SF CA to Prudhoe Bay and back in May/June/July, plus lots of other miles around Alaska. Loaded with 80L of gas, 20L of water, and full size...

Quick and easy mounting option for roof rack on shell

Forgot to add: the extended Megawarrior is just the right width for three MFC/MWCs flat side-by-side. Six go in front of the bar. Full-size spare aft of the bar, room for one duffel or whatnot to the side of the wheel..

Quick and easy mounting option for roof rack on shell

I wanted to share my roof rack install on my 2005 Tacoma with Leer cap (180 something, mid-high shell). Started with Yakima tracks, kit # 8001135 http://www.orsracksdirect.com/yakima-truck-rack-tracks-60inch.html Drill through roof, install with tons of silicone sealant (already stayed dry...
