Curious what people are doing for hitch-mounts... swing down? swing to the side? I need something for a second spare, keeping the stock bumper, hitch and first spare, but still with easy access to the tailgate. Hitchgate works but is $500. I'd like to see some DIY examples
When I measured out the flex on my 05 DC/LB with Dakar HDs, the Icon rears were at least an inch too short and would limit droop (10" shaft travel, 24" extended). I went with the AllPro Fox single-adjust rears (9.5" travel, 25.75" extended), which were a better match for my truck. But that's...
It'll be pretty loose with not much damping, and very little rear travel before the bumpstops. Maybe one inch. No problem to drive on-road but you'll want to slow way down offroad and for cattle grates. I have a shell and lots of gear in the back and the stock rear leaves were a joke. Dakar...
I have the E-range BFG ATs in 265/75-16 on my 05 DC/LB Tacoma. They're very heavy tires in load range E (10 ply) so you should expect a drop in mileage. Driving carefully, I average 19.5mpg (measured from GPS, not odometer which now reads 3.48% low) whereas I used to get 20-20.5mpg. Shrug, I...
I have a mid-rise cap on a 6' bed, and I followed this advice:
http://www.highinfatuation.com/blog/dirtbagging-101/
and built a dead-simple half-platform at bed rail height. Just 2x10s covered in cheap grey carpet from the hardware store, staple-gunned in place. Stapled big patches of...
I carry two - one has an outboard air compressor and hoses, surrounded by medium density foam. Second contains all the recovery chains and such. In my case both are just the right size to fit forward of the wheel wells in the bed, either side of the mattress down the middle
The 4 door longbed (actually 6-foot bed... some aftermarket makers call 8ft a long bed, 6ft standard or short bed, and 5ft extra short, in case it wasn't confusing enough) only comes with V6 and automatic. No offroad package. You typically only see them in SR5 trim, so power everything + LSD...
In hot summer months, I'll often leave the tailgate and/or topper glass lid open, and cover the gap with a large mosquito net. If it's not hot, it's always closed up with the side mesh windows open to a degree.
I have more than a few regular tents and I use them regularly when backpacking...
"I don't know why all you Tacoma owners are so ga-ga over them."
range range range... I've carried 4 20L gas cans and still come pretty close to the edge on range with my 4.0L V6. Aired-down, fully-loaded, 4Hi/4Lo mileage is stupid bad and my reading is that the 3.0D gets 40% better mileage.
The All-Pro / Fox single-adjustable rear shocks are 25.75" extended, 9.5" travel. I have them with my Dakars with the HD leaf, and it's a good match. There's 1/4" unused travel on the shaft including big bottom-out hits, and a little leftover travel at full droop. On my truck anyway; YMMV.
I have the 265/75-16 E-range BFG ATs on my 2005 Tacoma (4WD DC/LB). Mine are rated 80psi max and I run them at 80psi cold for on-pavement mileage. At that pressure I get almost the same mileage I got before with 3-ply 245/75-16 Bridgestones (measured by true GPS mileage, the 265s at 80psi read...
Flex test I suppose, only one side. Don't have a lift or enough gear to get the whole back end in the air safely. Besides it seems more realistic to me than getting the whole axle in the air.
got this today from ARB:
"rear N182 shock. It has an open length of 608 mm and closed of 352 mm"
Or extended length 24", 10" travel. Doesn't seem to be matched to my Dakars in the slightest, glad I didn't just blindly order those...
Well I guess I don't want to get into an argument about the semantics of 'overland.' I just figure, there's a certain amount of travel that the rear suspension is capable of; if it's just a matter of picking one shock or another, I might as well get one that's well matched to that. No point...
Greetings, first post here after suffering through the rather cosmetic-oriented forums I've found elsewhere.
I have a 2005 Tacoma DC/LB used mostly for deep backcountry duty around the US southwest. I did some suspension work when I first got it two years ago - Bilstein 5100s on stock front...
