Finally getting it stripped down. Had our baby boy on the 5th so everything rightfully came to a screeching halt until now.
Removed all of the surge brake/lunette parts up front, torched off the landing leg as I'm going with the rotating/removable jack. I haven't weighed everything yet but it...
Except for some surface rust on various contact points it's very clean. Funny you asked, I checked the tag a few days ago, nothing stamped, it's blank where the date should be. Nothing on the paperwork either. My guess by the shape it's in is late 80's to very early 90's....but who knows.
Between weather and Christmas the trailer project has come to a bit of a halt. I intend on seeing about an axle setup tomorrow, still unsure about hubs and studs.
Did manage to pull the sides and put everything in storage. Will remove the surge brakes so I can weld on my adjustable hitch...
Couple of questions:
1. Looks like the bottom shock mount is welded on to the military axle. Seeing that you have to cut and weld that why not do the same to the top spring perch since it's welded on too? Order an axle with no perches/mounts...
2. What about studs? Aren't the FJ studs 12mm? I...
Good information from both of you guys, I appreciate it. If you get it installed this weekend let me know how it works out, especially with the shock mounts.
Pulled the tarp out of the back and laid it out in the garage to dry out, seems to be in good shape just needs a good power washing.
Was looking at the bows, seems if you pull the legs that the bows might just fit in the stake pockets which would make nice low profile bows for a bed tarp...
If it doesn't quit raining I may have to put some pontoons on it... I bought the FJ as a daily driver, one thing I don't want to do is kill my 20MPG and a lift/bigger tires will certainly do that. Having said that, I modify every vehicle I've ever owned so it will be quite a test for me to...
Today started early, up a little after 4AM then off to Fort Hood in the rain and a 30-40MPH headwind. Left around 5:30, tanked up and grabbed some coffee at the 7-11.
Got there a little before 8:30. For those that need to pickup at Fort Hood you will enter on the north side off of Hwy 36...
EUC cleared almost 2 weeks ago, was scheduled to go to Fort Hood last Friday but GL called and said the Guard killed all Friday pickups until January, so I'm going in the morning to get mine. I'm overloaded with tools and what not but hate to be unprepared, 5 hours worth of driving.
I'll post...
Well.... no, I have a daughter that turns 23 on Jan 10 from my first marriage. Remarried last August, she's never been married or had kids, 14 years younger than me ;) and now she's giving me my boy! On January 10 no less...
I'm in no hurry per se, but with Christmas and the pending birth of my boy around the first week of January I might get in to a jam getting this bad boy picked up. Hopefully it will happen well before Christmas...we shall see.
UPDATE: It's June 2024 and I still have it. I noticed that some of the thumbnails in this thread are broken but if you click on them they still show up.
I have another thread going at FJ Forums but will keep one here too.
Based on Harley's M101 build thread I've bought an M101A2 and am going...
I had a local quote to sand blast mine for around 400.00, getting a few others. Until I actually have it in my hands I won't know just how bad the existing paint is..or how many layers. If it's smooth enough I may pressure wash then take my orbital sander to it a bit, shoot some gray primer then...
I plan on swapping the axle for one with 6x5.5 or 6x139.7 bolt patterns and a 108mm hub to match my FJ so I can run the same wheels. Also want electric brakes and maybe lighten the load bit.
Reading your thread now... good stuff!
To resurrect an old thread...
Exactly which axle did you use? PN or specs would be great.
PN's and/or dimensions on the boxes?
Where did you get the 'drop' lunette? PN?
If you can't guess, I'm doing much of the same thing right now.
