I've left the Toyota Fold, AKA my Montero Build Thread

So I caught up on some maintenance yesterday and replaced all three wipers, both fog light bulbs, a tail light (apparently we have 4, haha), and the bulbs in the compass. My one question is about the compass lights. Are they supposed to be on all the time or what? They bulbs were out when I...

    Lifts!?!

Ironman is from Australia too BTW. I'm thinking that's why its hard to get info on them. As far as I know, Camel 4X4 is the only distributor in the states and they just started up recently.

    Lifts!?!

Haha, fair enough. I'm pretty sure the only way to fit 35s with no problems is with the 2" body lift. 33s will flex out without any issues on a stock Monty so they'll be fine with any lift you choose. Apparently the OME kit increases rear travel by like 2" or something but I'm pretty sure...

    Lifts!?!

Ironman makes a lift for the Monteros too. As far as I can tell, its the same idea/height as the OME one. What I'm not sure of is if Ironman is as good as OME as I've seen very little information about them. The other option is a body lift. Off-roader has one and I believe he raised his gas...

I've left the Toyota Fold, AKA my Montero Build Thread

Ordered new bulbs for the compass/thermometer just now. $9 shipping for $3 worth of bulbs  At least I'll be able to see it at night for the first time. Now to figure what I bent in the front to make it pull so badly...

I'm liking that bumper, who makes it? Looks kinda like ARB but the hoop doesn't seem right.

    2nd Gen Montero buying advice

Testing the locker is easy enough. Find a dirt lot (really don't do it on pavement) and engage 4wd and the locker. Then turn a pretty tight corner and listen for the inside rear tire scuffing. If it scuffs, you're locked. If not, you've got a problem somewhere.

    SOFpirate's 1996 Montero LS buildthread.

Hey, my bumper looks just like that. Must be a montero thing :)

I've left the Toyota Fold, AKA my Montero Build Thread

I ended up finding the owners manual and a whole bunch of receipts in the nifty little storage bin below the passenger seat so that told me how to re-calibrate the compass and I did end up replacing some bulbs in the cluster. Of course, one already burned out again so according to my gauges, I...

I've left the Toyota Fold, AKA my Montero Build Thread

I know its been a looooong time since my last update but I was pretty busy last summer and didn't really do a whole lot to my truck. However, I just picked up my best mod yet and I'm pretty excited. I got a new co-pilot! Took him up to the Giant Forest in Sequoia Nat'l Park last Sunday for...

Have you ridden in an OME equipped rig to compare the two?

How do you like the Ironman suspension? I'm cross shopping them with OME but no one seems to have Ironman stuff, except you.

    Why does my mileage suck?

Haha, seafoam is always a fun time. I ran a can through my intake when I did my first oil change and had a good time smoking out the neighborhood. Didn't change my mileage though :(

    Why does my mileage suck?

I am using a conversion factor of 1.1 when I figure my mileage to account for the difference in circumference between the stock size and my 33s. The mpg numbers above are as close to real as I can do.

    Why does my mileage suck?

I just checked the mpg rating for my 96 Montero SR and it said 14-18 mpg. I'm getting 13-15. My truck is stock save for 33s so I do expect to lose a little mileage but not that many. Is something up or is this just what I should expect?

What Off Road Vehicle For Me?

Out of curiosity, where did you find a front lift for a 2nd gen montero? Or the longer UCAs?

    Roof Rack Build questions.

Nope, the Montero is body-on-frame. As a nice bonus, the frame is fully boxed from bumper to bumper. EDIT: I just sent a PM to plh on 4x4wire and he is no longer selling the bj spacers.

What Off Road Vehicle For Me?

Montero has my vote as well. My 96 is significantly better than my 87 Toyota pickup in every single way. The Montero is stock except for 33x10.5 BFG ATs and a HAM radio. The truck had OME leafs, shocks, and steering damper; an Aussie locker, and I regeared it to handle the 265/75-16s it had...
