Ok no Big Red updates because I have been out of the country for the last couple of weeks. But I did get to checkout some interesting machines. Sorry stock photos only as it is sort of frowned upon to take photos where we were.
These are International trucks classed as MilCOTS (commercial off...
We will be carrying Maxtrax and also Marston Mat. (2 @ 8’ and 2 @ 5’). They are heavy but work really well for vehicles my size. The good part is they can be used as mats around the camp if it’s really sloppy.
With the Maxtrax we will only get the ordinary ones as having replaceable studs is...
We keep about $1000 in small denominations. That’s for the dozer/excavator times?
The other issue I have with a winch is finding anything big enough to winch from. There is little likelihood of there being a vehicle big enough to use as an anchor and the place I am most likely to need help is...
25000 lbs for me is just over 1:1 ratio. Couple that with the 20% duty cycle it does become impractical for recovering a truck my size due to needed a minimum of a single snatch block and double the rope length for any self recovery use.
Since I have PTO outputs on both my transmission and my...
Batteries: I have the 4 AGM class 31 I think in the slideout box under the drivers seat. No house batteries as such as all batteries are used for truck and box.
Little giant steps. They are mounted to the cabinet beside the entry door. They happened to nearly fit there and are out of the way...
When I get a chance I will get the tape measure out. But it’s much better than what is was and a few inches better than the LMTV with the same wheels/tires.
So we made it to Overland Expo without an issue. On the test run the planetary's were hotter than I would of liked. 55 c at the front and 65 c on the rear. When I flush the axles after a couple of thousand miles I will fill them with synthetic but it was too big a hit on the wallet to do that...
Made it to Expo West. Had a great time in the DIY area giving a few classes and chewing anyone silly enough to ask any questions ears off.
But it has been bloody cold and sometimes miserable.
As for the axles and running gear. There have been no problems. Even the missus was commenting on...
Keep an eye on your EGT. As contradictory as it seems the EGR cools the combustion chamber at lower rpm (and does nothing at higher rpm). If you lug it now it has the potential to run hotter.
Don’t fill the chain oiler. They leak everywhere. Just manually oil it when you use it.
All the rest of the stuff in your storage area will thank you. I probably don’t need to tell you where that suggestion originated. [emoji33]

Gearing !! Using a great tool from Grimm Jeeper I got the following gearing/speed calculations. On the left is the original and on the right is the new setup.
