Texas to Alaska to Texas. 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid driving on the Dalton Highway and the Dempster Highway. July/August 2023.

I believe there is a hotel on the Dempster- mile 451 or something. We stayed there on the way to Tuk. You need reservations and also to try the “screech” in the bar. After which walking is difficult, let alone driving. It’s not usually crowded but you may have to wait for helicopter refueling...

Is there such a thing as too much light at camp

I see I missed some posts... You don't want the NSA descending on your camp thinking it's Roswell II... And most euro-spec vehicles have the running lights in their headlights which are sorry little white bulbs on one side of the reflector. Nosing in and running these as long as needed are...

Is there such a thing as too much light at camp

I mentioned it elsewhere, but I converted the rear fog light to a second reverse light on my defender (housings are identical), and then added the rear fog light high on the back of the roof top. Better visibility backing up (twice the light) and better visibility to those behind me in convoy-...

Is there such a thing as too much light at camp

Reading the successive responses, why not add a dimmer to your back-up lights? either a second (not in reverse) feed, with a dropping resistor and diode to avoid back-feeding, or a potentiometer in place of the dropping resistor, for an adjustable dimmer. This way, full brightness to see backing...

    WTS ZARGES 40568 ALUMINUM CASES

I just wanted to let everyone know, I purchased a pair of these boxes from Kevin. The entire transaction was super-smooth, and the boxes arrived in a few days (cross-country!) in fine condition. If you need some solid, water-tight boxes in this size range (which is just about perfect) do not...

    Hook Vs Loop?

I sometimes get comments on my “huge” hook but it’s the right tool for the job. It will not fail and auto-closes under tension. A rather large strap can fit there (or several) pretty easily.

    Heat Exchangers

I use a home shower valve as my "mixing valve" and you control temp and flow in real time as you shower... Here's an (old- 2004!) pic of the hoses hooked up. I'm sure you can work it all out with some quality time in Home Depot...

Is the roof tent trend over?

That right there is what I was talking about earlier. Apply some 21-st century technology to the problem! Lower profile and lower weight = no disadvantage to a RTT. I like it!

Is there such a thing as too much light at camp

I used a Coleman gasoline lantern for years, then "upgraded" to a Coleman rechargeable battery lantern, and now I have a new one- forgot I had even bought it, but I seem to remember the rechargeable one stopped taking a charge... But I think camp light is like off-road speed: "As slow as...

I appreciate a well engineered product. Nicely done.

Is the roof tent trend over?

That reminds me of an event up in MA where it had rained heavily overnight, and one ground camper ended up with a stream running right through their tent...

What are the strongest 5/8" hitch pins for recovery use?

I find the bow rig interesting. If it’s a straight pull, two straps are fine, but unnecessary. Use one (assuming it’s long enough) and then a second, not under tension, from shackle to one secure point on the vehicle. You get the flexibility of a sliding bow with the safety of a redundant (but...

    Recovery Ring Double Rigging

That’s not my experience. And that stretch is how it stores energy rapidly released when they snap. But it was used for decades for recreation and still is for vehicle recovery. I prefer the synthetic rope these days.

    Recovery Ring Double Rigging

Good points. And anchor vehicles need to be anchored. I was in a situation going uphill on a decent but rocky trail. Shorter wheelbase trucks were making it but I got hung up in a corner with my 110. I double lined up to a string of three trucks and proceeded to drag all three of them down...

Determining safe tire load rating required

Not a direct answer but remember max load rating is at maximum tire pressure. “xxxx lbs at 85psi” or some such will be on the side wall. In this example xxxx/2 at 42psi. So, you may want to go up to a D range to avoid riding on flintstone tires…

Pivot Arm? Articulation for Solar Panel

I suggest a rigid mount but with a twist. When stowed, round bars welded to the panel frame are secured to the rack via u-bolts or similar. When deployed, drum hardware is used to clamp the panel bars to the roof rack as needed to catch sun. I had my old panels spring mounted on my roof rack...

    Improving headlight options.

I feel a lot of lighting issues can be improved upon with careful and proper aiming of all lights, starting with the headlights. Once main "high" beams are on, then add driving lights to fill the gap, then pencils to reach further down the track. (it looks like you have great coverage with both...

    Recovery Ring Double Rigging

I dunno. Sure, the mechanical advantage is there (if you can fish the line through as you note, or fish a loop to a snatch block) but you already should have a properly rated winch, and a snatch block to double that rating. Since synthetic line has so little stretch, close pulls are not the...

    Heat Exchangers

Well, no, because there only so much heat available to transfer, and the "rating" is based on maximum flow on both sides (which you won't have). It "boils down" (HA!) to cost and physical size. You need to pay for it and mount it somewhere. My new one is smaller but thicker (more plates) as...
